Resolved Question

Which laptop would you pick?

Sep 4, 2018 8:39AM PDT

Hi there,

i am trying to decide for a new laptop for work (development mainly) and few games like LoL or Dota2.

So, currently my specs are:
cpu: i7 7th-8th gen
ram: 16 gb ddr4
disk: +256gb ssd
screen: 15 inches
So, i did some research in relation with the different options, and considering the budget factor (limit 2k), and i selected the following options:
LG Gram 15Z980-G.AP75P (€1.5k)
HP EliteBook 850 G5 (€1.8k)
ThinkPad X1 Carbon (€2k)
Dell xps 15 9570 (€1.8k)
Based on these options, i noticed some people reporting issues with Dell XPS 15 9570, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is really recent (apparently), so it is not available in any store. Also, i found really good reviews about the LG gram 15Z980-G.AP75P.

So, i would like to know your opinion in relation with these options, which one would you choose and why, and also if you have any suggestions outside of these list.

Note: i skipped the 2 in 1 laptops (since i don't need it to be a tablet as well) and i skipped touch-screens since i don't need it, and i would be paying for something that i really don't need.

Thanks,
Hugo

Well HP gets my boot quick.

HP failed to honor the warranty so I can't write nice about the company. That was a very strange experience I don't want to repeat and would not want any others to find themselves in a similar situation.

For me the Dell is a model that I've used in the past and would try again. Be aware that folk always report trackpad issues across all laptops. So I discount that issue along with driver induced issues or Windows as a whole since those areas continue to plague the PC industry.

What I use a lot are the Asus ROG and Acer Predator laptops. They are gaming laptops in the near 1K dollar range and work great.

Well...

Well, i had a look to the ASUS ROG and Acer Predator, and both with the specs i mentioned above cost between 2-3k.

In terms of all the options mentioned, i am more inclined to buy the LG, but honestly i am not sure about LG brand for laptops and computers products.

Thanks.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07661CYPD/ delivered to our door for $1,082.42
It is the "ASUS VivoBook Pro Thin & Light Laptop, 17" Full HD , Intel i7-8550U Processor, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD, NVIDIA Gaming GeForce GTX 1050,Backlit Keys, Windows 10, Star Gray, N705UD-EH76"

The display is very nice and it's quite a step up from her older HP DV6 17 inch unit. There are 15 inch models of that out there.

Gaming laptops are good for devs too

I always like to think worst case scenario for how I'd be using my laptop. Surprisingly the performance of gaming laptops actually lend themselves to other uses, but when you want to game you want it to work well. There are a number of pretty affordable options that actually are comparable in a number of ways to regular laptops. I found a good article that helped me make my decision. I think there is always something for everyone and having an edge on performance never hurts.
