Question

Which laptop to buy?

Feb 9, 2015 1:15AM PST

So I am buying a new laptop for college, where I would like to play some video games like Smite, and some other free to play online games, but I would also like for a laptop to handle 3d modeling and maybe some photoshop work, but I am currently stuck on which laptop I would like to get.

I have the ASUS ROG GL551 Series with these specs:
CPU: I7-4710HQ
RAM: 16Gb
HDD: 1TB
GPU: GTX 860m 2gb

While the other laptop is a workstation laptop:
Intel i7- 4600m
8gb ram
256gb ssd
nvidia quadro K1100M

Both laptops are a good 6 pounds and 15 inches, both of them have windows 8.1
I don't know which to choose from these 2, I like them both and both of them have great reviews. Can the Quadro handle decent gaming like some online games, Smite, TF2, Gmod.
Can the GTX 860m 2gb handle 3d modeling with large triangles and large 3d modeling files, like CAD and Zbrush?

Answer
Let's look at those GPUs alone.

Hmm?

Hmm but can the K1100M do much gaming? Im not asking for full HD all ultra, but like maybe 1080 with settings to low or medium? Maybe even 720p?

That's why I provided the link on the K1100M.

Since I don't see exact model with the K1100M I can't see if 1080 or more details on game play.

Seriously, school is one thing so game play is often second to getting your work done. Don't fret about a work machine as for around 250 you can get a good enough laptop for writing reports, etc.

Dell m4800
Feb 9, 2015 4:16AM PST

Its the Dell M4800 with 8gb ram with 256GB SSD with full HD display. I have a good laptop with i5 and 8gb ram with HD 4600 and 1 HD its just when I 3d model it is so slow and the rendering is just so long, same with doing textures on my models with photoshop. So will there be improvement if I got a GTX 860m with gaming and 3d modeling, and with the K1100M?

It appears you didn't check the links on the GPUs.

So in short, the 860M wins on games and more. Photoshop can use the GPU so along with the 16GB RAM, that wins again.

I did check the links on the GPU

But what I am asking is that will it have a major improvement with the GTX 860m, over the K1100M, I don't use over 4 - 8GB of ram in photoshop, haven't reached 8gb yet so far, I use more Zbrush and CAD for my modeling, sometimes blender and maja. Yes the links game a somewhat perspective of which are good and so on but both have there downs and ups. Is the Asus rog with GTX 860m with 16gb Ram, and 1tb HDD better the Dell M4800?

In short, yes.

My quick look at the GPUs found it to sweep the performance numbers. And Photoshop eats RAM and GPU so I can't guess why you don't use all that RAM. Not only that, but as the years pass you have the RAM and top end CPU/(almost top end) GPU to not replace it in one year.

Okey ^_^

So in short, the ASUS Rog crushes the Dell M4800 and can still be a major improvement in 3D modeling then the HD 4600, but a little less weak then the K1100M but has a major increase in Gaming capabilities, which can play top notch games with nice details and resolution, while having a nice work flow in 3D modeling and with the 16GB for more advanced programs using 16gbs and with photoshop?

You can see/read the numbers.

Just picking out one (2013 benchmark) I see the k1100m was 1259.
The 860m was 3056. (which smashed the k1100m?)

There's more at GPUBOSS if you want but the winner was clear here. A gamer would be upset today with the outdated k1100m

yeah

Yeah but the K1100M isnt meant for gaming, its meant for 3D modeling, yes the GTX 860M is alot better in gaming.

CAD folk would write that.

Not long ago I worked with folk running Pro Engineer and it didn't take long to debunk such myths. We got to try a lot of boards back then. Get to GPUBOSS and compare.
