General discussion

which laptop to buy?

Jul 13, 2006 12:59PM PDT

Currently, I need to buy a laptop for myself. I am a student currently in my senior year in the field of engineering. My old laptop is broken and so I need to buy one laptop but don't know which to choose. I hope that someone can give me an advice in which to buy. What I had in mind is E1505 Dell, but I think the features of that laptop is too much for me and also the price is to high for me to bear. Any advice is highly appreciated.

Dell Inspiron 6400 / E1505

I have it ant it is wonderful. It is a very nice laptop.

You can read my review : http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7587-0.html?forumID=69&threadID=175582&messageID=1929522

You can also look to the Dell XPS M1210. Many students have it for school and it can be a very powerful laptop and also for a little bit of gaming with the nVIDIA GeForce Go 7400.

The HP Pavilion dv5000t with also the nVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 can be a good laptop.

You must take a didecated graphics controller ( above an ATi Mobility Radeon X1400 and a nVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 ) to be able to run Windows Vista with all 3D effects of AERO Glass.

I think the Dell Inspiron E1505 is the best choice. You can have 5:45 to 6:30 of battery life and if you undervolt the processor ( it's not dangerous ), you can get another 30 to 45 minutes of battery life.

Good luck in your buying Happy

I like the Dell 1505 but its a little heavy. i like the latitude 620 also and the toshiba M100.
You can get the 620 after discounts at about US$1000

which laptop to buy?

I know several people who own Sony's and Toshiba's and love them. This is my second Dell...like I didn't learn the first time around. It is slower to boot up and after a while, the mouse/thumbpad quits working. Personally...in a laptop, I'd go with the Sony or Toshiba.

how about others laptops?

I wonder how about the Inspiron E1405 and Inspiron B130? Concerning about Sony laptops, I heard that they are not as good as Dell. Is that true or if I was misinformed?

Sony makes very nice laptops !

The only problem with Sony is that their models are overpriced.

The E1405 only has an integrated GPU. If yhou want to play games, this is not the best graphics solution. Even if you want to run AERO Glass of Windows Vista, you're better to go with a dedicated GPU like the ATi Mobility Radeon X1400 that I recommend. The B130 is the low-range of Dell, a computer for basic utilisation ( web sirfing and e-mails, nothing more ! Don't start a video encoding with this ! ).

SONY too pricy!!!
Jul 16, 2006 5:06PM PDT

Ya that is what I think too. I think that Sony laptops are too expensive compared to other laptops. That is why I think thinking of E1405. Are there any comments about E1405 for a senior computer engineering student?

I'd look at Apples and Fujitsu (Seimens in Europe)
Jul 16, 2006 10:58PM PDT

Both great machines, well built and having very nice displays...displays being very important to me. Fujitsu's/Seimens is a huge builder on the worldwide level, not so much touted here in the US.

Also ASUS

ASUS make very nice 14.1 " laptops. Look at the A6J line ( 15.4 " ) and at some 14.1 " models ( I don't remember the line number ).

In the A6J line, ASUS offers the ATi Mobility Radeon X1600, a very powerful GPU. Some models are also available with the nVIDIA GeForce Go 7600.

Choose a Centrino Duo platform, I don't recommend the Turion X2. The quality isn't as good as the Intel mobile platform.

Remmember : always choose a model with a dedicated graphics solution.
