Which is the thinnest laptop in the world?

Aug 9, 2004 3:27AM PDT

I'm trying to figure out which notebook computer is the thinnest on the market right now. I'm not sure if it's the Sony Vaio X505 or perhaps the IBM Thinkpad X40. Maybe it's neither of these. Does anybody know which is the thinnest, slimmest machine out there?

How fat is your wallet?

I've seen a tablet at a show that was 1/4 inch. It was just a demo unit. I imagine it was a few million bucks.

My wallet is pretty thin, unfortunately. Thinner than the thinnest notebook PC. But thank you.

The thinnest notebooks are still sold only in Japan. Sony has one that is over $3,000 and JVC is bringing one to the US soon.

You either have to go to Japan directly (and then not have a US warranty) or some companies will import it for you but at a huge price.

But the JVC is coming and Sony may ultimately bring over their model as well. There is a very thin Sharp model out as well that is much less than the Sony.

Sony is vastly overpriced verus Toshiba and others and the quality is no better (note: Toshiba even has Trubrite LCD's now to match Sony Xbrite) but if you are competing in the lighter/thinner market there are not any competitors at all so Sony can get away with it.
