I think the one that is..

compatible to your system and 3rd party applications. The one that suits your needs. The one that is recommended. See trustworthy antispyware.

Different users has different needs and opinion on what is best for them. Some prefer to use a security program that is certified. Some prefer freeware. Some prefer to use suites (bundled with another tool). Others prefer antispyware with real time protection. Some will check which antispyware or antivirus will provide fast support. Some will check whether the security program is updated often (which can be important when there are new malicious codes).

Some freeware security products works:

Antivirus: AVG, Antivir or Avast

Antispyware: Windows Antispyware, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, Ad-aware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, WinPatrol and Spyware Block List.

Antitrojan: a-squared or ewido

Ads and unwanted sites protection: IE-SPYADS, 3rd party HOSTS file

Firewall: ZoneAlarm, Kerio or Sygate

Cleaner: Index.dat Suite, CCleaner,

Antispam: Frontgate MX, Mailwasher, ePrompter

0 day protection: Prevx Home

Anti-Phishing: Netcraft Toolbar, Phishguard, SpoofStick, Cloudmark Anti-Fraud Toolbar or FraudEliminator

Privacy/Encryption: PGP Freeware

Other useful tools:
* BHODemon
* System Safety Monitor
* CWShredder
* BigFix
* Script Defender or Script Sentry
