The purpose of stamp cancellation markings is to show the stamp has been used and that's about all. Unless there's a tracking need for security reasons, it shouldn't matter. If tracking is needed, it certainly wouldn't be best to do this on top of a stamp. Those cancellation marks aren't always that readable anyway. I'm not sure what the issue is unless, to collectors, this devalues something. If this causes a problem for you, I'd take it up with the local postmaster first but I wouldn't want to get anyone's hopes up. I've had to contact mine a few times complaining of mis-delivered mail and pretty much found the true meaning of apathy in the process.
I collect postmarks as well as QSL cards from HAM OPERATORS.
When I called the post office today they said that they now only
put the date and time the letter was mailed and not the city and state.
This doesn't sound right to me.
I believe that if a city has its own zip code then that city and state
would be on the letter mailed.
Which is right????
