Which is better: PalmOS or PocketPC

Aug 13, 2004 6:34AM PDT

I was just wanting to get peoples opinions on which they think is the better platform/hardware, Palm or Pocket PC? I know this can be quite subjective but i'd like to hear what everyone thinks. Just from looking at specs, it seems like Pocket PC has better hardware.

That's easy. Which one has the application you want?

For me, I use my Palm for the usual contacts and notes. But next will be a wifi unit. Looking at the X30 unit from Dell.

PocketPC for sure. I had an iPaq- it was pretty much fully funtional from when I turned it on (MP3, voice recording, Excel, Word, outlook synch, etc). Bought a Palm Treo600: Nice phone, that has an ugly and truncated address book that I can synch & dial from (thats the good), BUT, the Excel only works for a eMail delivered spreadsheet attachment- want a full version=$29, same for Word, same for tunes, etc, etc- the embeded apps are all crap so plan on spending a couple hundred just to make it do what you thought it would. I would go back to PocketPC in a heartbeat as soon as something like the i700 is available on my GSM carrier.

If you are going to do a lot with Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files I would go with a Palm and Dataviz Documents to Go because Pocket PC's lose the formatting of documents when you transfer them.

I love my Tungsten C

It's got wifi, 64 meg memory, and color screen, so I can download my email in the morning and read it at my leisure. I can also check the top news stories and weather forecast. All without turning on my PC.

It has a 'keyboard', interfaces very nicely with MS Outlook, has a nice mapping package with GPS from DeLorme. It stores my genealogy database, has a full dictionary, lots of other apps, etc.

It also had a nice price compared to the PocketPCs.

If you are planning to buy, my best opinion is go to a retail store and look at the models they have. See which right for you.

I used to own a Palm OS since it was more popular, but I didn't like it because the GUI is like DOS trying to operate in 3D. While Pocket PC has a more sleek and fresh interface.

PalmOS or PocketPC

in my humble point of view, pocket pc has lots of better feature compared to palm especially if your using windows. we all know that wi-fi have a significant role on internet wireless connections nowadays. which most palm models dont have. economically speaking, palm zire colored models has the most cheapest available pda on the market but as i have said a while ago, it does not have wi-fi. hence, pocket pc, however, offers PDA with wi-fi ready less than the price of palm's wi-fi ready models. unlike palm, pocket pc's price is much expensive than palm's cheapest model, the palm zire 31. but pocket pc's price is deserving since it is wi-fi ready unlike palm. therefore, pocketpc stands out over palm

Thanks for the topic. I'm in the same boat as I have a 4 year old Handspring Visor Prism and I've just about done all I can to keep it alive... including installing a Radio Shack cordless phone battery because I refused to pay for the $120 battery from Handspring. After battery burns on my fingers quickly alerted me I had the battery installed the wrong way, I think it's about that time & I'm looking as well. Thanks for the great comments because it's not easy deciding. Since my Prism (which, by the way, is still going strong but with a lot less battery life) and the Sony Clie PEG-SJ22 I bought my wife, I have helped my boss with a Palm 3x (lost), Vx (died) and Viix (cradle died then unit followed) I helped him purchase an ipaq (forget the model) & the blackberry 950.

He uses the blackberry for wireless emails and calendar (mostly job related and job issued) & got the ipaq because he was tired of palms dying on him and the doctors all recommended an ipaq as his next pda purchase. I'm leaning towards an axim but I've really been out of touch the past few years after I got married so I want something that is still good for the basic calendar and contacts but also newer technology if I so choose to use it. Choices are axim x30, x50 or an ipaq. Don't trust palm too tough and also know that customer service with palm can get costly after 90 days and with Dell is almost nonexistent since they went overseas. I've had to make several calls to dell, palm, and hp due to job equipment as well so I know they can all be pretty shaky these days. This is a hard call. Thanks though for this topic because it may get me to be a little more decisive in the near future. The Tungsten looks decent as well but I don't trust the quality... at all! My wife's clie also loses all the memory from time to time and she relies heavily on the saved data on out pc.

By the way, my boss' blackberry and ipaq are compatible on the same Dell laptop inspiron with windows 2000 pro unless synching simultaneously but at home, my Prism and my wife's Clie won't work on the same pc. Does anyone know if I bought a pocket pc like ipaq or dell, would I be able to synch on the same pc at home with the Sony Clie using XP OS? My wife uses the palm software and I intend to use Outlook.
