I wish you had mentioned a budget price.
This is a case where money wins.
The best solution is a digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera. Which means you have to buy the camera and a bright lens. The cost for the two would start close to $2,000 and from there the sky is the limit.
If you can get by with no more than a 4X zoom lens, the Canon G6 would be a $650 possibility.
A smaller budget and/or the need for a long zoom should look at the Panasonic FZ20 ($575)
The smallest budget should look at the Panasonic FZ3.
A point-and-shoot camera will not serve as a low light camera. You need a camera with manual controls.
Which means you will need to know/learn about f-stops, shutter speed, and ISO settings.
Whatever you choose, a good photo software program is an asset. Something like Adobe Photoshop Elements.
I TAKE PHOTOS AT CONCERTS AT CHURCHES AND CONCERT HALLS WHERE THERE IS LOW LIGHT AND I USUALLY CANNOT STAND CLOSE TO MY SUBJECT (ON STAGE). WHAT IT THE BEST DIGITAL CAMERA FOR THIS SITUATION?
