Which is best digital recorder?

I am wondering what is the best MP3 Player to use for digital recording. I want to hook it up to a mixer and record live audio, then play it back instantly to review it. I figure I can record over it if I don't like it, (Or take it to my PC if I do like it).
I am a bit concerned about the recording quality of the low frequecies, as I want to record some low bass).
I want good sound quality, in BOTH recording and playback, preferably in a no-loss format.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Re: Which is best digital recorder?

I'd look to Fostek and Marantx professional gear. Not much mmore than an iPod.

Take a look at the new Edirol R-1. Very simple and self-contained.
