Kind of a poor choice
Sep 19, 2011 10:53PM PDT

Kind of a poor choice. HP has worked long and hard to be THE premiere bottom feeder of the PC world. First they duked it out with Compaq, then those two merged and Acer stepped in to fill the void left by Compaq.

Then there's Lenovo, which has done an absolutely marvelous job of taking IBM's computer business and running it into the ground. It's to the point where IBM is taking its name off more and more units, so as not to be associated with it in any way. Rumor has it, internally IBM has stopped using Lenovo as it's supplier of computer systems too.

When it comes to laptops, I'd say stick to Dell, Toshiba, and Apple. Then, even for very limited uses, I'd still avoid the lower end units. It's not an iron clad rule, but it still holds very true, that with computers you get what you pay for. You buy some low end model, it's likely going to be crap. Shoddy construction, loaded with all kinds of preinstalled crap that will be difficult to impossible to remove, and quite probably some of the core electronics will be of poor quality leading to all kinds of fun. Given the high degree of custom hardware in laptops, it only amplifies the need to choose carefully. HP and Lenovo are both horrible choices for several different reasons, and I would advise avoiding the both of them.

140 bucks might be for some better GPU or that 2 year warranty.

No I don't think that.

Time and time again we find that one maker can make duds and then the next one is fine. The one thing I learned is we can't judge by the maker's name.

I'd still like to hear what's different on the machines to see what the 140 bucks is buying.

The i5 is the better by far. Last test? Is the display and keyboard something you can live with?

I know it's been answered but I'd want to offer

my own experiences with IBM/Lenovo. I've used these in my work for quite a number of years and the company I work for provides these. The first IBM I had was very nice and particularly the keyboard. I don't like laptop keyboards anyway. We'd moved from Dell to IBM. The Dells were sturdy but the keyboards back them were not made for humans. I bought an IBM T-42 (Thinkpad series) for my wife and it worked great. In fact we still have it. I've since purchased 3 more since they turned the operation over to Lenovo. This includes 2 more T series and one S series netbook. While I don't like netbooks in general, this one has been very good for traveling. Thus far, I've only had two hardware failures with 6 IBM or Lenovo laptops. Both times it was screen failures. These happen. One was with a company owned laptop and I had to turn it in for repair. The other was with my wife's first T-42 after at least 3 years of use. I was able to replace the screen myself for about 150 bucks. In any event, I've felt that human interaction with the device was at least as important as performance if not more. You have to look at the screen and work with a keyboard and/or mouse. Try these out before you buy and make sure they suit you.

HP is better in my opinion

In my opinion you should buy an HP G6-1B33CA, Bilingual Laptop i3-370M, 15.6-in. HD LED,4 GB, 500 GB, Integrated Altec Lansing® speakers, reason is HP is more reliable and has more functionalities. Price also reasonable, so make your mind and buy one.

I bought HP i3 370 from Costco, twice in last 2 months, believe it or not, but first had screen problem and second had other problem and had to return both... and the keyboard, no neumerical keypad !!!
so, i completely agree with you and HP is no go....
had dell PC in the past and froze almost every 5th min. so dell is out too, my friend has Toshiba laptop and has lots of problems so i will leave that one behind as well...
so, now i have two to choose from, lenovo or asus that is within my price range..
i saw linovo and i do like the keyboard, nice contrast, not found of chiclet style but nice layout..
lenovo is bit less pricey than asus, but when you see the usage vs problems...
couple hunders is not much, for good system that will not give you headache every now and then. since i am not in rush, i still have my antique desktop... so i can wait till good system goes on sell in 6-8 weeks...
for the name, i like both but performance, i am not sure...which one is better lenovo or asus..
i am so glad that i have so many replies for my questions... it helps me in seeing good and bad of the systems that i would have not known otherwise. Thanks..

sorry my friend, i did buy that system twice from costco, believe it or not problems both times and that was it...
yes, it is cheaper than other brands, actually, i bought it for 399 so really good price... but did not work for me..
so i have to look for other brand...more reliable and prefomance too..
