You can/should have 5.1 surround sound without the optical connection; it's just that optical connection give better (quality?) sound. Please correct me if I am wrong..anyone.

As for computer, I suppose if you a sound unit in your that support 5.1 then I can't see any reason why not. But then I also wonder..WHY? I mean sitting in front of this little screen with all the big sound around you?

The 2.1, 4.1, 5.1 are reference to speaker connection configurations. 2.1 means you have stereo with a subwoofer; 5.1 means you have left and right front, left and right rear, front center and subwoofer.

Now tell me the reason you want to connect the home theater to the computer.

As far as the HT speaker configuration go, we won't worry about that right now. The (AV) output (on the dvd) connections (yel, red, wht) should connect to the video1 or video2 input of your HT. Try that and see how it work (sounded ok?). Now remove the red and white connections then hookup your optical connection (does it sounded better?).

As for the 2.1, 5.1 stuff. If you have all the equipments for a 5.1 system then by all mean; set it up as such. So give that a try. have fun and good luck.
