General discussion

which graphic card is better?

May 2, 2009 10:58PM PDT

I'm currently looking for a laptop that would enable me to do daily work as well as games and entertainment from time to time.I've narrowed down my search to two laptops (an hp hdx x16 or an hp dv6-1106tx).The thing is I've read conflicting comparison tests between the ATI RADEON HD 4650 and the NVIDIA 9600M GT.In one site the 4650 trumps the 9600 in benchmark tests while on another site the 4650 is ranked lower than the 9600.
By the way,the laptops that I'm looking at, the hdx has the 9600gt with 512MB while the DV6 has the HD 4650 with 1GB.Both rigs are identical in specifications (processor, memory, screen size).
Which card performs better?
Thanks in advance for any input!

Frankly?

The benchmarks if you can find them are what to ponder but after we go so far I think it's fanboy time (excuse the term but I can't find another one) where some scream "____ is the only maker of video cards I'll use."

Both are fine solutions and just like a horse race may trade positions given different applications.

I'd get the benchmarks. And just last year, 256MB was considered AMPLE for GPU memory.

When I did some digging

I learned that 386mb (or so) mb of Video Ram was good for most standard resolutions.

Both of these cards are probably fine. Which is what you said...

Well...

Bost graphic cards are excellent in terms of performace for a laptop. It's really a draw on this one. In terms of the benchmarks that I've found the average difference is minimal. I suggest the ATI Radeon though, because of personal preferences of warranty, credibility and reliability.

A Side Note-
Though I've seen the laptops myself, and you could get a better laptop at a better price- The Asus G50Vt-X5 or the Gateway Gateway

thanks for the input!
I actually am very interested in the gateway fx series with the 9800 gts card but its quite impossible for me to get it if I factor in the shipping costs and the after sales service (based on the region where I'm at).

9600m gt or ati 4650
May 3, 2009 7:39PM PDT

well, i disagree with some of the threads here,,,but my opinion is only worth 2cents...the ati 4650 is a better game card than the 9600m gt..period...it out-scores the nividia in about every gaming benchmark, and that included 3d2001,03/05 and 06....

another thing to remember, if you are going to dab in linux, then i would go with the nivida card,,,linux distros, i have found it easier to install nvidia drivers with nividia dedicated graphics.

but if you are not goinng to dab in linux, i would go ati,,,it may be just me,,but i think ati has nicer looking desktops than nvidia...the colors....

good luck....links -
