Although the title of this post would suggest anyone that I'm praising the Nuvi 255W, I have been using and liking the Nuvi 760 for about a year now. It gains satellite acquisition pretty fast from a cold start, and keeps the signal very firmly - even in downtown San Francisco. Tall buildings seem to have no effects on the satellite acquisition. The text-to-speech and bundled FM traffic receiver have been helping me beat traffics - and thus saving my jobs - outstandingly. However, the reasons why I don't recommend this unit to you are that:
1. I always connect my Bluetooth headset directly to my phone - it just makes more sense to me this way;
2. the MP3 and Audiobook player are not dreadfully necessary, especially if you already have a radio/stereo in your car;
3. I don't believe in paying monthly extra for the MSN Direct service.
On the other hand, the Nuvi 255W comes with an unadulterated navigational performance. Widescreen? Check. SiRF STAR III Chipset, the exact chipset used in the higher-end Nuvi 760, for excellent satellite acquisition? Check. Text-to-speech? Check. For me these attributes are required for deciding a good GPS as you seek after, and the Nuvi 255W has it all. It does not have Bluetooth connectivity, but it's not that important to you anyway.
However, if you want to use FM traffic receiver, I'd recommend the Nuvi 265WT instead. It's pretty much the same as the Nuvi 255W - but with extra FM traffic receiver and Bluetooth compatibility.
Hope this answer your question.
Got a Garmin 200 for Christmas and took it back (looking for the text to speech option) so adding a little bit to the $$$ from the 200...narrowed it down to the three above...a 760, 255w and/or 265wt...read good and bad about all (bluetooth is not that important) - just a good GPS... thanks
