Which external back up is best?

by pdoyle / January 16, 2006 12:12 AM PST

I'm looking for an external hard drive to back up my ACT software as well as the rest of my hard drive. I'm running win 2000 pro. on a desk top, and want to open this back up drive on a laptop running XP.
I've looked at Maxtor onetouch 2, and the reviews from users are very bad...

Any help would be great! Thanks.

Just one problem.

It's been widely agreed that "backup" includes features such as:

1. Multiple copies.
2. Write protected media.
3. Removal from the backup site.

Hard disks can fail this unless you find an unit with a write protect feature (the virus/bug/issue can wipe out the backup.) And most will not get 3 backup media so you have minimum of one copy offsite, one local and one being written to.

It's sad that marketing of such devices do not tell the full story.

Still, there must be some external back up drive on the market that is reliable.

Look at my multiple copy and backup plan? I have some 3 sets of DVDRW that I rotate through. CHEAP!!!

I also have a hard disk on USB. It makes a copy (not a backup) in no time. It fails as backup, but just another copy when I want a quick second copy of work.

A ssh file server. Now we're getting close to a write protected hard disk. Pretty techy and a virus can't delete those files since it's not a network share.

My 1GB USB memory key holds what I can never lose. I take it with me everywhere.

What do you think?
