Resolved Question

Which email ?

Sep 17, 2011 1:07AM PDT

My friend who can only use email, has a Hotmail address, and would like to have an email address where she can download the email onto her computer which is linked onto her husband's broadband. Can you recommend one she can use, or can Hotmail be downloaded into Outlook or Outlook Express ?

at first, but now I am confused.

I thought that transferring Hotmail to POP, (which is what you are asking), was stopped some years ago. But I now see an article and walk-through in the link below that seems to suggest it is still possible to manage Hotmail email accounts in OE.

http://email.about.com/od/outlookexpressfreemail/qt/Access_a_Windows_Live_Hotmail_Account_with_Outlook_Express.htm

The trouble is, the article isn't dated, or no date I can see. So I can't say if this is current. I do wish these article and blog writers would date their darn submissions!

It's worth a try as your friend won't lose or break anything. The worst that can happen is that OE fails to connect to the Hotmail servers.

Trying tomorrow

Many thanks for the info. I am visiting my friend tomorrow so will try this, and have also found an email called Runbox so if Hotmail fails will try that, unless anyone has information about Runbox that I need to know.

Is this a free service?
Sep 17, 2011 9:56PM PDT

Only I looked at their web site and could only find a free 'trial' which then turns into the cheapest option of $19.95 per year.

I would wonder why any non-business use person would want to pay for an email service.

Where else then?

I searched for "free email address" and that's what came up. Where else can I find a free email address for her?

Gmail addresses are free and offer a POP3 or IMAP interface for downloading to a PC.

Well.

Your friend already has a free email service in Hotmail. Does he/she need another one?

I know that Yahoo Mail can work on POP/SMTP as I have one myself and use it on Thunderbird, but it will work just as well on OE.

But if that method above works, then all is well, isn't it?

Are you saying
Sep 17, 2011 11:31PM PDT

you are getting Yahoo Mail on POP without paying annual sub fee (called Yahoo Mail Plus)?

AFAIK Gmail is the only one which provides free POP. Yahoo and Hotmail require 19.99 annually for POP...with ANY email client!

I don't pay for my Yahoo email account

So, yes, that is what I am saying. and I download Yahoo's email via POP to my Thunderbird email client.

If the hotmail can be downloaded onto her Outlook/outlook express it will be fine, but if not, she will need another address.

Many thanks for all the help. I have set up Outlook Express for my friend and downloaded all her Hotmail email into it and its fine, although I have not been able to transfer her address book from Hotmail, she will have to start collecting them again as the emails come in.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions.

and good work.

Strange about Hotmail's Address Book. I don't know Hotmail at all but are you certain there are no options for Exporting, or for Saving the entries?

Once upon a time

Once upon a time that was possible, but I don't believe it is anymore. With a little effort you should be able to get Mozilla Thunderbird to do it. Just look into the webmail extension.
