Resolved Question

Which download to use for soundless PC?

Aug 11, 2011 6:45AM PDT

Computer specifics:
Gateway GT5082H
C51G+MCP51
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
version x86 Family 15 Model 35 Stepping 2
32 bits 512Kb 2004Mhz

I removed the Realtek sound from my computer then realized I needed it.
A Diagnostic report from my anti-virus had it listed as Realtek AC97 Audio.

Could you direct me, please, to the download I need to undo what I've done?

Thank you for any quidance.

What I did was...

I removed it as in "Add or Remove Programs" in the control panel. A dumb thing.

In Control Panel>Sound and Audio Device Properties [is this the audio driver file you mentioned?]>Hardware, there are 6 devices listed, none of which say Realtek.
And there is no update button to click on.

I found the driver file: Control panel>system>Hardware. There was an Windows update button which I clicked on, but nothing improved after I restarted my computer.

Try this....

Ok, try this: Go to Control Panel/System/DeviceManager/SoundVideoGame Controllers, right click and choose to un-install. When that is completed, re-boot. When u get back 2 the desktop, at the lower right eventually u should see a pop-up saying new hardware found. Let Windows then search for that driver file. Once it's found, install it.

If that file isn't found the first time, then go back a window and choose to specify where that driver file is that u found. Select that, and see what happens. What needs to happen is that Windows is "re-introduced" to that file, and reinstall it accordingly.

That should do it. Let us know!

Thank you, ebbtides and R. Proffitt, for your efforts. They are greatly appreciated.

My 6 year old Gateway, a faithful and hard-working assistant, crashed this afternoon before I had a change to follow your instructions and is forever soundless.
