which dell (or other)

here is yet another "which one should i get" thread, but i was lost, and you all seem to know a heckuva lot more than me so:

I'm a Web Designer, and will mostly use the notebook at home, but want to be able to take it on the road with me if I feel like traveling a bit. I want a nice big screen, and the most power I can get without breaking the bank (not especially worried about weight). Right now i'm looking at:

Dell Latitude D800:

Hi,

I also use the computer partly for web development and considering the two very same notebooks. I am leaning towards the 5160; it is not as mobile as the d800, but has better performance. Since mobility is not a great concern, the 5160 may be a better choice.

The reason I am holding off with the purchase is because of the contradiction on cnet about dell notebooks. cnet seems to rate them quite high, but users opinions are quite mixed with consistent complaints. there is a post on this in the forum if ur interested in the answer...

Cheers

Yea, the difference in opinion between the editor and the users scared me a bit too. I'll look for the post you mentioned.

Thanks.

Get an Athlon 64 notebook. Imo it doesn't make sense to buy a computer with a 32 bit processor except if it is very low priced. Many people who buy a 32 bit system in '04 or early '05 will probably regret it in the second half of '05 as great 64 bit software starts appearing.

64-bit is already here. Microsoft is showing it's scared of losing userbase over 64-bit that XP64 is a free download and the first year license is... free.

Also noteworthy is Linux in Suse 9.1/9.2 and Knoppix64.

There are more too. If you mention "apps" then one I use already is Virtual Dub (64-bit!)
