wrong thinking?

I personally don't think in terms of computer vs computer, but more in parts vs parts inside the computer. The 4 most important parts to me are the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and PSU. That has to be what I want for my purpose, the rest is just options, which I would look at secondly since many can be added if needed with aftermarket products.

Laptops are different however, there quality of construction becomes much more important.

Many folk just need a good PC that doesn't break the bank. For the most part the best sellers at Amazon are just what they need. Look at the current number 1 or 2 at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbwPuqBcwYw and for 250 you're on the web and more.

But them you fall for the "best" trap. For writing, why not the 250 buck model?

As to brand, you need to consider that each brand has had less than great models. Brand doesn't matter with a possible exception for Apple.

If this is an article, just write it and get it done. You can't be write as with the one exception and even then they had a few stinkers. Brand doesn't really matter. Each model matters. It's a puff piece, admit it, write it, get a grade and move on.

Apple. I have owned an Apple Mac of various models since March 6, 1984. We have 12 Apple devices in-house today. I have had 2 failures in all of those models & years, BOTH covered by my AppleCare for NO additional cost. Here's a poll/study:

Nobody Builds 'Em Like Me!

And I don't care who you are, you can make that same statement.

If you build it yourself, you can overmatch a $10,000 Falcon Northwest or Alienware for less than $3,000. And you'll know how to fix everything yourself should something go wrong, but nothing has EVER gone wrong on any of mine except once when it was struck by lightning (and even then all I lost was the Ethernet card!). Just choose your parts wisely.

There aren't that many things to get: The list includes:

The case.
The main processor.
The motherboard.
The RAM.
The power supply.
The CPU cooler.
Storage (you GOTTA get an SSD for system and apps and an HDD for data)
Any optional installed peripherals (like a card reader).

And that's it.

Just do a little research, make sure the parts all match (you don't want a 2011 chip on an 1150 motherboard, or DDR4 on a motherboard that only takes DDR3, or a power supply too weak for your other goodies), and it's really a WHOLE lot easier than you think. And the satisfaction when you first plug it in and it comes up fine is something you simply can't experience when you get it from a store.

Now, that said, I have found HP to provide a very advantageous price/performance ratio in desktops, but Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba seem to do a bit better in laptops, with Toshiba having the price advantage at most performance points.

Most self-builders, especially if they are planning to make a better PC than an $3000 Alienware, would need a graphic card also. I wouldn't call that a peripheral like a card reader or a DVD-drive.
