Question

Which camera to buy for travelling?

Oct 13, 2013 11:30AM PDT

Hello everyone,

I know this must be a question that gets frequently asked so I apologise in advance.

I am traveling around Europe for 2 months in a few months time. I'm hoping to video all of my travels, sort of a mini documentary if you will.

I also want to take a fair amount of photo's and create a decent album.

Is there a small camera that can take care of both functions? So far the camera the stands out the most is the Sony Rx100.

Feel free to add suggestions and ask further questions as well. Thanks guys!!

Sony RX100

From everything I read and see, the RX100 looks like a good choice.
It is a bit expensive, but a good camera is expensive.
It has a bright lens and a large sensor assembly.
Four times larger than the standard point and shoot sensor.
You will have better than average low light ability with that camera.

Since you will be visiting several countries in Europe, you will want to get the appropriate electrical plug adapters so that you can charge the battery in those countries.

Thank you heaps for that. It does seem to be the camera that come's the closest to performing both functions effectively.

I own one and the lack of 24p and tiltable LCD make it a no go for video for me. The RX100 II fixes both of those things, but I still find the form factor too small and fiddly for me to capture good video relative to my GH2.

If you can increase your budget, I would recommend a Panasonic GX7 + 20mm "pancake" lens - Mark

I use a Canon Elph because it fits into my pocket. I use it on auto "camera" with the flash off because it is ready instantly.
