Which camara for me?

by 2cay2 / May 7, 2007 5:48 AM PDT

Hi everyone,
I am hoping you can help me decide which camera to buy! I have been looking at the Canon powershot S3 IS, but I thought your input would help before I commit to buy it. Is there something more suitable for me in the same or cheaper price bracket?
I want to mainly take the following sort of pics (with the same camera!)
Snaps of my pets and family etc.
More 'photographer' type portraits (amature but good quality)
Micro close up of flowers
and clear zoom pictures of wild birds.

Many years ago I was into photography (before the digital era, lol) so I want something I can 'play/fiddle' with too, creating different effects. Although I have forgotten much regarding such things as depth of field, a good bit of focused study on my part should have me back on track. JUST point and shot wont be enough for what I want right now. Having said that I don't want to be changing lenses and getting over complicated for family snaps! Point and shot for these pics is also necessary!

So am I looking at the best digital camera for me? Or do you have a better idea? I honestly haven't got a clue. So any input will be much appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Thanks so much for the reply.
I will have a look at all the cameras you mentioned. Do you think I am looking at the right type of camera for what I want?
It is such a difficult desision to make. To date I have never bought the right digital camera. At first I think they are great, but then I find them lacking - poor image quality. But then if I told you what I had bought in the past you would say "tut, tut, what did you expect from that!" LOL
I really want to get it right this time!

The Canon S3 IS and the Sony "H" series of cameras are the top of the line. They take excellent photos and have just about every feature that you can put on a camera.

They have a good set of manual controls for people who want to get more involved in photography.

Your next step up from these cameras is the DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras.
Which will be just about double the price of the S3 IS.

A great camera does not guarantee you a great photograph.
There is lots to learn and understand about photography.
If there are any local camera clubs or camera classes.....be sure to attend.

Ansel Adams is quoted as saying, "Taking a good photograph is just a matter of knowing where to stand".

Thanks snapshot2,
That is just what I needed to know.
Many, many years ago I had an SLR camera and learned a fair bit about how to use them creatively, but a DSLR is likely beyond me at the moment. So it would seem the S3 type cameras are exactly what I am looking for.
Your replies are much appreciated!
