Firefox is based on latest versions of Navigator.
Sep 27, 2005 1:28PM PDT

As a web designer, I've been a die-hard Netscape user for years (Explorer is too tolerant of sloppy code). The last ''official'' version of Netscape's Navigator was v7.2... though AOL now offers a hacked imitation called ''v8.0''.

Just before Netscape went belly-up, they publicly released the source-code for their browser. As of version 6.x, features such a ''tabed browsing'' and built-in popup blocking were added.

Firefox has these features because it is based on the same Netscape source-code, and Netscape is still superior (IMHO) in the looks-department as compared to FFox.

One of the things that make ''Mozilla based'' browsers more secure than Explorer is the simple fact that they can't run Microsoft's vbasic or ASP scripts, or their adultrated version of Java/Javascript that make certain security violations possible that you just can't do with a browser that observes universally accepted security standards.

If you are an Explorer/Microsoft fan that thinks MS's giving their browser away for free benefitted the public and the entire computer industry, ask yourself: ''When was the last time Microsoft released a major version update?'' Not since Netscape went under after they crushed it.

Well let's see if Bill Gates asked all the IE users to jump off a bridge then the world would have approx 54% less internet users!! That certainly would speed things up!!!

Firefox 1.0.6 is the only choice for now...
Sep 27, 2005 2:49PM PDT

As a Mac user (Dual 2 GHz Power PC G5 with 512 MB DDR SDRAM and Mac OS X 10.3.9), there's not much to choose from out there -- Microsoft abandoned IE for Mac about 2 years ago; and Safari is so s-l-o-w that it drives me crazy.

Firefox has a few bugs -- while trying to type, the "Find" feature kicks in automatically and you can't shut it off. It's also a little unstable with more crashes than I used to have with IE. So Firefox is the winner by default.

Here is a perfect opportunity to get some real data!
Since it is possible for the pollsters to actually see what each respondent's browser is, that data should be used for this poll! Then we would really know who is telling the truth!

Firefox - still the best
Sep 27, 2005 7:23PM PDT

In my opinion Firefox is still the best browser currently available. Well Opera also comes very close. IE has become one of the most archaic, insecure and a browser without a lot modern features and the worst support for web standards (the same happened to Netscape 4 when IE came out). I don't know what people at Symantec are smoking (probably some drugs rolled in money from Microsoft) to say that Firefox is less secure. In my experience it is much more secure, I had no problem while using Firefox, while I got a lot spyware and popups and other annoying and dangerous things with IE. And be sure to check the page of Secunia (www.secunia.com) security experts. They track all public security problems in various software. And currently Firefox only has 3 open and the highest level is Less Critical. On the other hand IE has 20 open security holes and the highest is rated Highly Critical. So Firefox has much less security problems open and when something is found they also patch and fix it a lot quicker and it will be even quicker with Firefox 1.5 with new update system. A big plus is also that Firefox is not part of the operating system so even if it has some problem it can't do so much harm to operating sstem as IE can do. And there are a lot other things that make Firefox a much smarter choice for browsing then IE. Firefox has tabs, renders pages more quickly and more correctly, it has support for extension and some of them are realy wonderful, there are themes so you can make it look just like you want, it is regularly translated into my mother language, boomarks are better designed then favourites, it works in many operating systems including Linux and Mac OS X, it supports more web technologies like MathML and Firefox developers listen to users more. So there should be no doubt, Firefox (and most of the other browsers) are light years ahead of Internet Explorer.

Far from satisfied by the security Firefox or Internet Explo
Sep 27, 2005 7:27PM PDT

I use Firefox 1.0.7 because I like tabbed browsing but I am far from satisfied by the security Firefox or Internet Explorer provides.
I use several antispyware programs (Spyware Doctor, Ad-aware 6, Spy Sweeper, Spybot search&destroy, Microsoft Antispyware and others) a firewall software, there is also a hardware firewall at the office, two different antivirus programs, one at home (pstn connection) and one at the office (adsl connection), several antikeylogger and registry fixing programs, I regularly disable cookies and try to prevent them from being installed again from tools/options menu, never run activeX from sites that do not trust and still I have had several serious security problems. Leading to the point where right now I don?t have any access to my hotmail account where all the feedback from my blogs is being sent and can?t talk to my friends through my MSN Messenger account. Plus I don?t see any way of regaining access to that because my credentials have been changed and my alternative e-mail address has been deleted.
The only way I can think to get me out of this frustrating situation is to create all my blogs right from the beginning using a new nickname and a new mail account, and sent this information to all my old friends that I see reason to keep in touch with.

Here are some of the threats I find in my system from time to time:
Trojan.respamo:HKLM/? HKCR/?,
Avenue A Inc.,
HitBox,
HitsLink,
CWS

I would also like to add here that all the programs I use are trial, shareware or freeware versions because I live in Athens Greece where the cost of life is just 15-20% lower than in New York while my annual income is slightly more than 7.000 Euros.

Can you recommend me any new catchy nickname? :S

MSN is great. It's pop up blocker is really effective. It also has big buttons on the taskbar to access fast and it has a dashboard to preview mail see who's online (without opening messenger) and you can even hear music without opening media player it also shows the temperature and stocks or reminders. This is the best Browser i have used.

Sep 27, 2005 9:56PM PDT

I have always used Internet Explorer even when I had AOL and MSN as an option. I have never been plagued with security problems and I keep plenty of apps for the spyware, etc. I recently downloaded Firefox a few days ago and it appears to be a good browser, too. Netscape does not work well for me. It seems to have a mind of it's own. In the meantime I will be using Firefox but if it doesn't work out, I will return to IE6.

OPERA rules
Sep 27, 2005 10:15PM PDT

I wonder why people don't use opera. It's fast, the most secure, fully customizable ( even more than mozilla) and is totally free !!! Want more ? Just try Opera once and give it a chance to become the first browser you're going to use.
Now that I'm used to Opera I never open Explorer and Mozilla.
