Which Browser
Sep 27, 2005 10:20AM PDT

Netscape 8.02.

I like the ability to choose which 'engine' Mozilla or IE to use. Most times I stick with Mozilla. I like the tab browsing, RSS feeds, multiple user toolbars etc. etc. etc. Only issue I have is that it seems to consume RAM.

Which browser,
Sep 27, 2005 10:25AM PDT

I'm using and have used Netscape for about 9 years and am using the current 7.2 version, it is slow loading but once up is quite good.
It allows you lots of folders to store emails etc.
I also like it's address book when sending out 1 email to large numbers of people.
I have also used Thunderbird which is also quite good, but it is just a copy of Netscape.

Firefox....still!
Sep 27, 2005 10:39AM PDT

I've used Firefox since v0.8 and have just updated to 1.0.7. It was always bound to happen - hackers latching on to Firefox, that is, as it became more and more popular.

But as a web designer, I do use IE as well as Opera and Netscape to check my websites are working ok. Hats off to Opera for finally dumping the ads. And to Netscape for just hanging in there - v8.2 is not so bad with a very good email client which, as has been mentioned before, Firefox has copied (both being part of Mozilla).

For general browsing, it has to be the one with the most frequent security updates which, at the moment, seems to be Firefox.

Then again, Opera and Netscape being less popular may well be less targeted by hackers......

Oh dear - my brain hurts!

Safari 1.3.1
Sep 27, 2005 10:30AM PDT

I'm running Safari 1.3.1 on a Mac G4 "Cube" that is almost 4 years old. No major problems, but occasionally I'll find that some of the "buttons" on a website are non-functional.

Yeah, me too - I use IE 6.0 but I just looked at the reference to SlimBrowzer and considering a download to try it out . . .

I just loaded the new AOL browser and I like the way it looks and works so far. It is very user friendly.

Netscape 8.3 (primary)for some things, and MSIE (secondary) for others. Some of the websites I frequent are written for MSIE and are all screwed up if I use Netscape so I had to go ahead and install and keep MSIE updated.

Hackers, SPAMMERS, etc, are going to target the program(s) by which they believe they will have the greatest impact on users. It's a power/ego trip.

Opera all the way
Sep 27, 2005 10:36AM PDT

I used to be a hard core Firefox man. Always telling people to switch and try it. Then opera released their for free and I downloaded it to try it out. Man it is nice. It includes most all of the Firefox features and seems faster. It was overwhelming at first it had tons of buttons and a cluttered space, but after customizing it a little it feels great. I still haven't decided which is my favorite and probably wont untill space runs out on the hard disk. They are both great. Unfortunatly firefox plays better with most sites. Both win my vote, but if you are worried about security Opera is the way to go. If you want that fuzzy feeling of using Firefox and Limitless expandability go with Firefox. As for me I run them side by side.

Opera all the way!
Nov 24, 2005 11:52PM PST

I migrated from MS IE to Firefox and ultimately Opera 7.54
It is free, stable, fast and most importantly for someone whose home language is not English: it is available in my mother tongue (Afrikaans). Most browsers ignore the importance of making it available in other languages spoken all over the world.

opera rocks!
Nov 25, 2005 4:14AM PST

I've been using opera for approx 2 mos. now for general internet use and research. I agree, it's speed seems impressive. Best of all, it's so customizable. I've had no problem with site compatibility. I'm sure it's far from perfect, but to my surprize, I really like it.

Crash City with Firefox
Sep 27, 2005 10:39AM PDT

I have never been able to run Firefox without it crashing time after time, and then freezing the system all together. I get Firefox recommended for use after I complain about IE crashing, but the problems with Firefox are many-many more than IE. No thank you! IE is irritating but usable, Firefox is impossible and now unsafe to boot!

thats windows for you
Sep 27, 2005 10:42AM PDT

Its your own fault for using Windows. Go for linux or a Mac. Much more stable(most of the time Happy Or maybe you should just clean your computer. Or if nothing works try opera.

Firefox is actually pretty stable.
Sep 27, 2005 11:03AM PDT

So is Mozilla. It's likely that you have spyware or a Trojan on your system that is trying to do something that Firefox doesn't allow, and it's crashing the browser.

Try using AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy on your system, and see if they improve the stability of your computer. If you can't download them, have a friend burn them to a CD and install from the CD.

My Firefox used to crash
Sep 27, 2005 11:46AM PDT

Mine crashed twice. I found out that it could not handle all the extensions that I had added. Some of them apparently were conflicting with each other.
I cleaned up my extensions and themes, and have not had it crash for a long time. over a year.

FireFox ???
Sep 27, 2005 1:02PM PDT

I have not had a single problem to speak of with this browser.. only a few web pages could not operate with it. never a freeze. I guess you could have a Trojan or something to cause such a fit.. I also have Netscape, and Internet Ex. and all are the latest version. I always go back to Firefox...Had netscape when I could load it with three Floppies...

Firefox No Crash
Sep 28, 2005 4:27AM PDT

I have been using Firefox for over two years and it has never crashed. I suggest you have a problem with your OS.

- Collapse -
Sorry for you to hear that.
Sep 28, 2005 9:22AM PDT

May I ask what kind of OS you have at first and secondly maybe your hardware configuration is on the cheap too.

Not saying that you need a lamborgini but a well clean install if you are not stuck with a e bloatware machine and making sure your partition are NTFS and not "Fat" will help a lot another help too would be a good degrafmenter program as Windows is prone to fragmentation and this is been reconized by Microsoft itself.

If you have a good defragmentation program a clean install and maybe, maybe a registery cleaner that is in the top ranking as for the defrag program too and a goooood Anti-spyware program as most of 90% of today computer problems that crash or slow down are caused by spyware first and followed closely by virus.

kids were have a real hard time with their own computer and did a clean with spyboot, MS Anti-Spyware Beta and some defrag have stop their crash, of course at the end it might be so much that you might resort to a clean installation of your OS followed by the installation of the Anti-Spyware and Virus program.

Well hope this suggestion(s) might help you.

Firefox....stability and the crash...
Nov 24, 2005 11:16PM PST

I have totally eliminated Internet Explorer out of my browser diet. I've had enough of the over bloated clunkies...and the lack of true preformance. Firefox all the way! Before Firefox there was Opera. I haven't had any problems with Firefox running on Windows 98a, SE, WinXP Home & Pro including SP2...until now. Occasionally I get a crash on my current Windows 2000 Sp4 box. Fairly clean system...just been haven't gotten around to diagnosing. Firefox truly is a stable browser...with many less problems than IE if you only take some time to research if you have a problem I garuntee you will not be dissapointed.

Netscape 8.0
Sep 27, 2005 10:41AM PDT

I downloaded Netscape 8.0- and thus far after a few problems it works very well. I became tired of the spyware on IE 6. I tried Firefox, but had some problems with it- I did however pick UP NO spyware with it. I used IE for a few hours one night- and picked up 22 spy ware infections- of which several where 'elevated risk'.

At this point I feel IE is risky to use. With Netscape 8.0 I have picked up 4 spyware infections (but I was using the IE engine at some web sites- I have since changed to the Firefox engine. Netscape is faster on my machine then Firefox, and is at least as fast if not a tad faster on some sites then IE.

I will stick with browser (Netscape Cool for now. I thinks its fast- secure and much more sleek then IE- and has fewer 'glitches' then FireFox.

8.0
Sep 27, 2005 1:02PM PDT

I like the design and the speed. I will wait until it has full email capability before I select it as my default browser.
I also use the Firefox engine. Bill gets enough of my money for the OS.

old habits
Sep 27, 2005 2:25PM PDT
Wink

old habits die hard.

back in the day, when many thought netscape was king, i hated it. it was bulky and uninspiring.

today?

i still think netscape and its children are bulky and unispiring. (yes that means you, mozilla and firefox)

so far, i am stuck with microsofts buggy (but functional) Internet Explorer 6.whatever. yes is it a security hole that will probably never get fixed, but its what gets used.

when in rome . . .

Inspire me. show me the errors of my ways. give me a browser that doesn't look, feal and act like AOL or netzero

Feeling a little dirty?
Sep 27, 2005 11:04PM PDT

I used to use IE6 and as soon as I was done browsing I would have to clean my computer from all of the spyware delivered via IE. It felt like I needed a shower each and every time that I went browsing.

I currently use the Firefox 1.5 Beta and find it more secure. I don't pick the spyware or trojans that were always on my computer with Internet Explorer. I have the bells and whistles that tabbed browsing and RSS feeds provide I can customize the browers as much as I want and I have yet to crash my system. (Unlike IE which locked up the computer quite a bit)

The only time that I have to use IE is when I go to the Windows Update site. Any other site that doesn't load or work properly with Firefox (of which there are very, very few) I leave them to their own and don't visit their site.

I use Safari 2.0
Sep 27, 2005 10:46AM PDT

I used to use Chimera by the Mozilla project but when Apple came out with Safari, I couldn't resist. Its basically Chimera with more features: tabbed browsing, integrated google search in toolbar, pop-up blocking, integrated address book content (for pesonal websites and auto-fill), private browsing (renders you almost invisible on the internet), and best of all...it's faster than Chimera, IE, Netscape, and Opera! It doesn't hurt that it's very secure either.

Maxthon
Sep 27, 2005 10:51AM PDT

I have been using this Maxthon for more then 1-1/2 years. I like it over Netscape and IE. I have both running and I simply enjoy my group tabs that I have different groupings for different activities. Just click and open the group. And I have 10 - 14 tabs open where I simple jump to where I need to go or want to play with.. Yeah it is IE based but with all the extra features you can keep all the others. I like Maxthon.
