I did 3 months of research before buying my HDTV. Budget, screen size, tech (LED/LCD/Plasma), room size, viewing type (movies, network TV, video games.) all come into play when making your purchase. For myself, I needed a screen at least 42", that had no noticeable latency during video game play, had great, consistent picture quality, and a decent price.
I ended up with a Panasonic VIERA TC-P42G25, Plasma. All of the numerous positive reviews coupled with all of the features that I was looking for, led me to buy this. I am completely happy with my purchase and will hopefully be sticking with Panasonic Plasmas, for life.
Judging pictures in big box stores like Best Buy and Fry's Electronics is a horrible way to pick a TV, because all of the picture settings are dialed to "Torch mode" which makes the displays overly bright and will burn out very quickly because of this. It is used as a selling technique and most people fall for it. Do your own research online
