Which 1TB Laptop should I buy.

by John2Theobalds / October 29, 2013 2:22 PM PDT

I'm after a 1 TB laptop. I don't care which make or what it looks like. Ideally a good processor and 8GB memory. Other than that, as cheap as possible. Any ideas?

I'd skip the usual 1TB mark for more speed.

I look around and the 1TB drive offerings are usually a little on the slow side. Look again at 640 and 750 HDDs but at 7200 so you won't feel the hit. Surely you can leave something off the machine?

I really just want to use it as a hard drive that I can occasionally use as a laptop. It would normally just sit in a cupboard doing nothing. I have an Asus Ultrabook that I use for work. It's great because I travel a lot but the hard drive is samall. My plan was to have a 1TB laptop. Then periodically transfer everything from my Asus to the 1TB so I can keep the Asus nice and empty and then back up the 1TB onto an external HD. So I have everything on the 1TB and available should I need it. Plus it's all backed up.
My other thought was to buy two external hardrives one to keep everything on and one to back it up. Can you back up an external hard drive with another external hard drive?
At the moment everything I have is on a very dodgy old Vaio that's on its last legs.

To do that all you need is an external drive.

And since a laptop with a 1TB drive is not going to give you 1TB of storage space I think a drive is a better solution.

I checked a laptop (just one) and 71GB was chewed up just for it's restore feature. The OS and such eat more so you won't get 1TB.

For well under 99 bucks you can get your 1TB (billion bytes) and in parting I use SyncBack to sync my external backups.

That makes sense.
I'm a bit of a computer idiot.
How would I make two back ups on separate HDDs using SyncBack?
My Asus has two USB ports. Is it as simple as plugging them both in when I move files off my Asus?

Try this.

Get what you want on the first HDD then setup syncback to sync the drive with the other drive. SyncBack isn't that hard. And it's free.

Will do.

I'll give the old 2x1TB HDD + SyncBack route a try.

Thanks for your help.
