Jun 27, 2006 4:54PM PDT

Hey guys. My laptops motherboard broke ( so pissed )and I need to replace it by the END of the week! PLEASE HELP!!! I need to find a website or company that will sell me the motherboard. Price is not an issue!

Specifications of the motherboard.

Laptop: Hybrid Gear Command Top (Evo X)
(Equivilant to the Alienware M7700)
Model # (chasis and motherboard): D9T
Chipset : Intel 915p
Socket : 775
Other: Has a bunch of stuff on the back like a tuner and dvi port. It costs about 600 bucks. I Found the mother board at excelcomputers.com (google it link might be wrong) but they are out of stock.

Try the out of stock place by PHONE.
Jun 27, 2006 10:11PM PDT

Call them and nicely see if you can find out where they get theirs.

-> I don't hold much hope here. The area of spare parts on the nonames is mostly why you see me pan such in these forums. This is not because of other people's stories but because of my involvement in service shops over the years. The nonames have meant nospares for years with no sign of improvement.

Did you try Ebay?

Might have to buy a new computer...
Jun 28, 2006 12:46PM PDT

I've never heard of the laptop before and a quick search turned up empty (neither of which is a good sign), but a search did turn up matches for the motherboard. Unfortunately each said it was out of stock, and even if it weren't they're charging $599 for it. Given the high cost and apparently lack of availability you may be better off just buying a new cheap computer. Sad

Sorry.
John

P.S. Out of curiosity, how exactly did the mobo 'break' and is it still under warranty? If you bought it last year there's a 50/50 chance it hasn't been a full year yet, assuming it had a standard 1-year warranty.

PLEASE HELP
Jun 28, 2006 4:11PM PDT

it has a 3 year warranty but the company is out of bussiness. The laptop cost over 3 grand, and has a pentium 4 processor(3.8ghz 2mb l2 cache socket 775 {same as daul core}) in it, which barely any laptops do. I need to find that EXACT model.

No offense, but this is a life lesson.

I've seen this story over a hundred times (remember I've spent time in the PC repair industry.)

These no-names have less than stellar service and parts supplies.

I'd consider taking the CPU out and whatever I can salvage and make a nice desktop for less than the 600 buck mainboard.

And how am i supposed to use...
Jun 29, 2006 3:33AM PDT

...laptop ram, laptop hard drives, and a laptop graphics card? All i could salvage would be the processor. Just give me help on finding a new motherboard. I know I live and learn, but instead of telling me what i did wrong, help me find places that actually SELL motherboards.

The hard disk can be salvaged.
Jun 29, 2006 3:45AM PDT

Over at geeks.com and newegg.com and maybe frys there are under 5 buck laptop to desktop adapters.

-> Think it over. If this board failed, why would the new one do better?

It's time to find a better exit.

"help me find places that actually SELL motherboards"

Again, this is the lesson. Laptop motherboards are proprietary and only found from the maker and maybe used on ebay.

In closing, did you contact the two places I noted?

Coontacted the original manufacturer...
Jun 29, 2006 1:21PM PDT

Called the manufacture (hybrid gear is like alienware...they buy the parts...than build the pc) . Had to call lot of places to find the actual manufacture. Turns out it is Clevo. So I called clevo and they are gonna sell me a motherboard...I think. The costumer support women told me to send an email with the specifics. Hopefully it will work. And as for salvaging the hard drvies: Good to know BUT why spend 2500 dollars on a new desktop with the same specs (no hard drives or processor) when I can spen 600 dollars buying a new motherboard and 150 to have someone else install it???

Because the same thing will happen again.
Jun 29, 2006 9:24PM PDT

You do have the hard disks already.

Just hate to see people fix what is well known to be troublesome machines.

In closing, you are exaggerating the desktop costs. Don't do that.

Im not exagerating...
Jun 30, 2006 4:55PM PDT

...the cost. The ram needs to be replaced(200), the graphics card needs to be replaced (500), the DVD drive must be replaced (norm. 100), the chasis and main unit obiosuly needs to be replaced (600), the monitor needs to be replaced (200) , the web cam needs to be replaced (50) , the 9 in 1 card reader (50), the sound card (200), the wireless (used laptop card pre-n 120 ) , etc etc etc. So my price will easily top 1000 and maybe even 2000 when i am done. I dont need help currenylty on finding a motherboard. I will update if I need help. It looks like i will be shipping my baby off to Salt lake city, where American Express will actually swap out the motherboard , FOR FREE! Hopefully all goes well! Afterwords, I may need help installing windows but we will get there when we get there...

PS . In the meantime, if anyone has heard of the company Hybrid Gear (Future Top) and knows ANYTHING as to their status, or how to contact them in anyway, PLEASE post any information here! TTThanks for everything!

Take time to read other posts like yours.

Yup, in this forum we read the same issue with alienware and other such names. No spare parts. You found the maker and are experiencing the same issues the rest of us are finding.

Best of luck,

Bob

PS. I'd cut my losses and move parts to a desktop. It will be a shame for you to repeat this lesson.

R. Profitt...

...thanks for all the help you've tried giving me, but I WILL not be buying a desktop. For the price it just isnt worth it. My laptop is insanley fast and there is no reason that i should spend tons of money to get a desktop when i could just buy a new motherboard, the price of which may be 0 - 400 dollars. I am sticking with a new motherboard. I am 15 and consider myself as a pc guru (for my age) and i was stupid enough to not have an antistatic band on while working on the laptop, in a carpeted room. Thats what caused this. Well I wont be doing that anymore, and thats the lesson learned. So let this thread die (at least temporarily) and Ill update as soon as i get new info.

TY for the hybrid gear bbb report, + update on my laptop
Jul 3, 2006 7:37AM PDT

Thanks for the BBB report. Sorry to hear that my 200 dollar warranty wont be doing anything.

Update on laptop: I bought the laptop on an amex, and they are shipping me a "coffin". The box will arrive, i put my laptop inside, ship it off, and american express will have it fixed and shipped back. Total cost for shipping, shipping insurance, new motherboard, diagnostics, benchmarking, and return shipping + insurance:
0 dollars and 0 cents!!! TY GOD! I will update soon!

Can you post instructions for the rest?
Jul 3, 2006 8:42AM PDT

It's amazing (miraculous) that you were able to acquire such free service, whether it comes through for you or not (hopefully for you it will). Could you please post some instructions on how you were able to get Amex to just do this for you? This isn't for me, but for other people who might encounter this unfrtunate problem in the future.

Good luck!

Many cards have similar programs. AMEX seems to be one of the best, IMO.

Google: AMEX Buyer's Assurance

Funny that one of the first lines on the page is:

''Suddenly your laptop just stops working. Not to worry if you bought it with your Card."
