where's my desktop?

For no apparent reason, my keyboard suddenly went funny this morning. When I clicked on Sound Up and Sound Down, I got desktop widgets (normally called up be pressing the middle button on the Mac mouse. Desktop icons had a new "select" appearance, with a square/oblong around them.
Nothing I did in System Preferences made any difference. In desperation, I decided to re- install Mac OS X from the startup disc.
Upon which, horror of horrors, all my Desktop icons were gone (though I'd clicked "Archive & Install" and "Preserve Users & Network Settings".
When I tried to call up the previous desktop icons, I got the message "The folder "Desktop" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient privileges" !! What's going on? I'm the only user!!

Did you reboot before you decided to

archive and install?

Desktop widget can also be called up using the keyboard "F" keys. F4 on the new aluminum ones.

What does "get Info" give you when you use it against the old Desktop folder

Thanks

Thanks for your suggestions.
Having laid panic aside, using Time Machine and fiddling around with various System Preferences, including Keyboard Preferences, I'm almost back to normal. For a while, everything was haywire. I even had VoiceOver (Text to Speech) going on every selection, despite never having called it up! I thought this rubbish only happened with PCs...
When I rt-click on desktop, it merely says "modified today at 14:44"

Without laying any blame,

all I can say is that sometimes, it happens.
