Where is Google going?

Feb 17, 2006 8:59PM PST

Google, search engine come video store, come advertiser, come email provider - but where is it all going?

From Google: Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.

Sounds great, huh? To organize the worlds information. But tell me, why do they have to be a content provider to do that?

Don't get me wrong - I kind of like Google, its just that sometimes they confused me.

Last week, shares in Yell.com went up a bit after some talk of Google maybe acquiring them.

What I do not understand is why my Google Share money is being spent on content. Does GOOG really need to own the content to best index it?

What you all think? Do you like where Google is going, or not?

Benevolent (so far)

Until such a time as I see Google acting truly "evil" I like what I'm seeing from them.

They took a lot of flack for the handling of China's censorship on searches but I support their explanation. Fortunately, in a country where you CAN say "no!" (the U.S.) they have, and so far have stuck to their guns when others have folded.

Google Earth is simply... magical.

If Google ever does come out with free versions of Word, Excel, etc... too bad for Microsoft. Let them redefine their business - they've certainly done a lot to squash their competitors (even illegally) over the years. Google has shown itself to be very Mac friendly and all of their stuff would be cross-platform, I'm sure. If they take a chunk out of the iTunes music store... fine. Let Apple find a way to improve upon it and pull marketshare back.

But finally, if they buy and then light up all that dark fiber and make the internet in the U.S. live up to its true potential... go Google.

Google Earth IS amazing ..

.. but credit goes to Keyhole, the creators of the software before Google bought it. I've been playing with it (called 'Keyhole' oddly enough Happy ) for some time before Google bought it, and I'd have to agree that it's absolutely amazing. I love looking up old addresses where I used to live just so I can watch the fly-by and the zoom-in .. Happy

Yes, I'm easily entertained.

My Hopes
Feb 18, 2006 11:30AM PST

I hope they do something for video like they did for photos (Picasa). That program is truly amazing. I use it to manage 4 years worth of digital photos and numerous scanned photos. There are so many features in Picasa that I can't name them all.

Google could really make a video management, exporting system work. I just REALLY hope that is something that is in the works and that they release it SOON!

Why is the song Highway to Hell playing in my head? Wonder if this is where Google is going.
