Where did this come from?

Feb 27, 2004 12:24AM PST

Suddenly, I get the "Run As" dialog box that asks me "Which user account do you want to use to run this program?" whenever I try to do anything. I've poked around in the Registry and tried various things and can't get rid of this thing that I didn't ask for. Suggestions, please.

TIA, Paul

"Run As" is correct to ask which user. A recent .NET offering would make some new users you can see in the Control Panel, user management tools.

OK, Bob, now while I'm preparing to recover my system from my backup...

...since I have a bad feeling here, tell me why I can't access Norton Anti Virus since that dialog box started popping up. Memory's faint here, but I suspect I've got a case of malware.

I've run the W32.Beagle, W32.MyDoom and W32.Netsky removal tools from Symantec without success. Before I recover, I'm going to run Ad-Aware, Spybot and do a few other things, but I think I know where this is going...

"Run As" to a full system wipeout seems a little severe.

Why not uninstall the (microsoft) .NET offering and remove its user?

Run As seems to be quite a proper item to ask who to run it As. Why you have written all the above with just the information and discussion in this thread is a mystery to me.

Bob do you mean he has installed a windows update with a .net
Feb 27, 2004 5:34AM PST

on it and it has given him an addition user, thus the problem? Also the solution is to uninstall the .net update from the add/remove box and delete the additional user from the users accounts?

In short, that's what I thought I've written.

The behaviour of Run As seems proper to me.

False alarm, Bob; no malware.

Some of the latest nasties have been able to disable AV programs, so when I couldn't start NAV from the System Tray, I got a little nervous. Then, I remembered that I'd deleted some things in the Registry using RegSeeker. You guessed it - I deleted a key that caused the issue. After restoring the backup that RegSeeker creates, all's well again. I then went back in and manually deleted the stuff I knew I wanted gone and that the loss of wouldn't goober up my system.

Lesson learned: Review all suggested Registry deletions before clicking on the "yes" button.

.NET was never the problem, Bob, as I never installed the 28+ Mb .NET framework in the first place...
