Where change from double to single-click icons?

by Dave Konkel [Moderator] / November 16, 2004 1:46 AM PST

Hi, All.

I have a new laptopn, and want to change it so a single click activates an icon -- but I can't recall where that setting is located. I THOUGHT it was in the "customize desktop" area, but apparently not Sad
Thanks in advance -- Dave K.

Mark, can you expand on this? I do not find "Folder Options" under Tools in my Internet Explorer 6. What am I missing? Confused

Thanks!

I don't know about you, but I couldn't find it where these other guys said it was.

I found it using:

C:/WINDOWS/HELP/ADMTOOLS >Folder Options

Glen, glad Jim managed to clear that up for you.

rg, where were you looking for Folder Options?

Were you looking inside Windows Explorer?

Note; we are talking about Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. Windows Explorer can be found in Start > Programs > Accessories

Or right click the task bar and click Explore.

I have no trouble at all finding Windows Explorer, but there is nothing there called Tools.

It almost sounds like we are talking about different software.

Right clicking on the toolbar does not bring up Windows Explorer on my PC...it isn't really important.

Thanks Mark!

Yes it is all cleared now. I know about "Explore" and how to get there. My mind got twisted between Windows and Internet Explorer... please forgive my lapse. Grin

Have a good night!

Besides what Mark and the others have already said, you can just click on "My Documents" and go to tools/folder options there also. If "My Documents" is on your start menu as mine is, it's only 5 clicks start/my documents/tools/options and click the appropriate button. Takes about 3 seconds that way depending on how fast your clicking finger is LOL

You are right. It is on the Navigation Tool Bar at the top of the screen. I was looking in the list brought up by Windows Explorer...which I almost never use.

Hi Dave,
I did it by clicking on Start -control Panel,go to "performance & maintenance" then on the Left hand side you will see "file types" click on that then you will have a small window(at least I do ) with "tasks" ,"Browse folder" and the bit you want at the bottom"click item as follows"
I have mine with the top one highlighted ie single click to open an item(point to select).regards John

Hold on. I did this, then I went to "My Pictures" and tried to move some. When I clicked on to a photo, I was immediately on my way to the original site for that photo. I was opening up a file with that single click. Took me a while to figure that out. These sort of things can happen when you choose the single click routine. Be careful what you wish for. Jack R.

Jack thats a different problem.

If you have files in your My Pictures folder that take you to a web site when you click them, then you have saved the web site url page, and not the pictures themselves.

You cannot be transported anywhere on the internet by clicking or double clicking actual picture files saved on your hard disk.

Hi,
To change from double to single click icons:

1. Open any Windows Explorer window, for example My Computer.
2. Click on tools on the menu bar (on the top).
3. Click on Folder options in the menu which pops up.
4. In here, click on the general tab.
5. Now under "click Items as follows", select "Single click to open an item."
6. Select any one of the two options under the main option.
7. Lastly, don't forget to click Apply and ok to save changes.

That should do it.
