Get a real ''EDB'' Startup disk.
May 27, 2004 8:54PM PDT

"BootDisk.com" is a good source for acquiring a copy of an EBD/Startup disk for the particular version of Windows.

About the protection error.

It can happen on Windows 95 on "fast" CPUs. It can happen for far too many hardware issues. I don't recall what hardware you have and how old it is, but you may be facing one or the other issue.

Not that it will survive on the internet very long with 95. At least you know the issue and won't use Internet Explorer or Outlook...

Windows 95 had that limitation.

The stock 95 used FAT16 and as such, you can create 2 gigabyte partitions. In your case, you create 2 more partitions (and format them.)

FAT32 showed up later.

You are dealing with a very old OS.

Windows 95 is DOA!
May 27, 2004 9:53PM PDT

Worth noting is that with the Microsoft Code Leak, the Internet Explorer that runs on 95 is at most version 5.5.

That version is now explotable and after all your hard work of getting Windows 95 up and running, you may see it go down again if you browse the wrong web site.

There is no cure, but you should know about the issue so your expectations are kept low.

Then you set the machine to run slow enough.

This area is strictly for experts it seems and high wire technologists.

The answer is to run the PC at 200 or so MHz to get the patch in. I pity the poor user that gets such a machine since they may never know how to do this.

Are you writing an installation manual so the owner can retrace the install steps?

Are you sure that patch works?
Jun 28, 2004 2:49AM PDT

He indicates that he could only use 2 gig partitions which indicates an early version of Win 95 but the patch is for OSR2 versions with which FAT32 capability was included.

BTDT too many times. If we go back over the poster's other postings, it's a shame to see them struggle so. My bet is they are still trying to get some old chess game working. But that's their choice.

Remember that in 1995, "dos-heads" still roamed the cities, but today, finding someone to install 95 correctly may find more grey hairs or none and failing memories. Nothing was ever done to make installing Windows easy.

Windows 95 install from scratch ...
Jun 28, 2004 8:12PM PDT

is not the most easy thing to do for newbies.

I suggest you try another game that runs on Windows 98, or find an old cheap Windows 95 machine on eBay. They must be practically free by now, especially if you only need the box itself, and not a monitor.

My LCD screen screen came with calibrating software to adapt it to the details of different video adapters. There's not a single reason why it shouldn't work with Windows 95, although I didn't try.
