General discussion

where are the TV shows I recorded?

Jun 10, 2005 9:26AM PDT

I have a windows Xp media center pc. I have recorded movies from TV but I cannot find them on my hard drive. I tried to find them while in the create DVD program but I can't find the file name. Can someone please help me find out where to find these files other than in media center? thank you.

Where did you save them to?
Jun 10, 2005 9:37AM PDT

Only you can say that.

Have you used the Search option in the Start menu?

Have you tried ''My Documents''?

When you save a file like a tv show, what is the default location of the Save As dialogue box? (ie, when you click Save As, and the Save As dialogue box opens, what is the folder in the ''Save in:'' option? Did you change that folder to a different folder before you clicked Save?

If you saved them to DVD, did the copying process complete? Copying a tv show to a DVD would take at least a few minutes. If your copying process only took a few seconds then perhaps the process did not start and the file is held in a temporary location somewhere.

If you ''did'' save them to DVD, did you have a DVD in the DVD player when you saved the file? If so, have you checked that DVD disk?

save tv shows are in media center
Jun 10, 2005 1:06PM PDT

I didn't do any type of "save as", otherwise I would know where they are. These are tv shows that the computer recorded in the media center program. It records like a vcr, you say what time and what channel.

I have searched but no success. When I open media center, I can access these movies, but I cannot find any properties for them.

In Program files, I can find "media center solitaire", but nothing else from media center.

I am not familiar with Windows XP Media Center
Jun 10, 2005 6:53PM PDT

or with the Media Center program, but are you saying that, as you watch the tv program within the media center program there is no option to goto File > Save As?

I have just been to Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center web site and their FAQ's

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/evaluation/faq.mspx

It seems that you are unable to copy or save certain copyright protected shows, and can only view them within Media Center.

looks like I'm better off using Tivo!
Jun 10, 2005 9:28PM PDT

thanks for the help. Based on the FAQ's it does look like I'm better off using my Tivo if I want to record and watch later. Unfortunately, the old movies I already recorded are only available by watching here, on this pc. I know the pc was intended to replace my tv and old pc, but it just doesn't work for me.
when my pc screen is 27" or larger, then maybe LOL.

recorded tv folder
Jun 11, 2005 4:12AM PDT

I have MCE 2004, but I am sure that file storage has not changed. The easiest way to navigate to the folder is start menu, shared documents, recorded tv. If you go directly through C: goto documents and settings, all users, shared documents, recorded tv.
