The only way to drive down the cost is to only make phones in 100,000 or more lots. Since there is no big call for 'just a phone', those models cost more than the others.
Hope this makes sense.

I understand marketing ploys and strategy, but why have cell phone manufacturers stopped making cool looking phones that DON'T have cameras and wireless and all those other useless features? It seems like all they want to market to are the younger set who need to be ''jacked-in'' 24/7. I think it's terrible that cell companies cater only to those of the 'bigger, better, faster, more' mindset. Why are they only marketing to the crowd of teens & 20-somethings and alienating the rest of cellular customers? Currently I have a Motorola V-300, which I like just fine, but have to leave in my car every day I go into work (M-F) because it has a camera. I've been looking at cell phones for the past few months and have not been able to find an international phone that is purely functional at the risk of looking cheap and ugly, like the V180 or one of those candy-bar phones which are absolutely horrid. I am sure that I am not alone in saying that I have no need for a phone that takes pictures, captures video, plays MP3s, or is wireless capable, but that doesn't mean I should be stuck with an ugly and cheaply made phone. What say you on this?
