When will you start using Windows Vista?

Apr 26, 2007 6:03AM PDT

When will you start using Windows Vista?

I'm already using it (How do you like it?)
I'll upgrade soon (When?)
Maybe within the year (Why?)
After a year (Why?)
When I'm forced to (Why?)
When Microsoft stops supporting XP
Never (Why not?)
I don't do Windows (What do you use?)

I have used a mac, nice colors but less functionality
Apr 27, 2007 8:30PM PDT

Games: yeah ok get a console, last time I checked the biggest console out was the Microsoft Xbox 360, which syncs with your Windows computer and allows you to access your media library on your TV. Of course, I'm more of a PC gamer. That's where you get the best graphics, with the best graphics cards. Something a mac can only dream of displaying.

Mouse: This was just something that got to me when I first had to use a mac at a friends house years ago. Also the one mouse button on their laptops. However, built in mice on laptops on not the best on either platform.

Programs: I have a PSP, I have an Archos 404, I have a HTC P4000 Windows Mobile 5 phone. I would not be able to convert videos for my PSP or my Archos. I would not be able to sync my Outlook data and other files on my phone.

Virus and Spyware: I've used Windows XP for many years and Windows 98 and Windows 95. I have never had any issues viruses or spyware. This is because I run an antivirus and anti-spyware program, I have a router and a firewall. You can say that macs don't have viruses, but that just isn't the case. If you can run programs on it and it connects to the Internet you can get viruses. I've seen iPods with a virus for crying out loud. The reason you don't see any many viruses on macs is because far less people use them.

Restarts and crashes: I don't know what motive users are doing, but my Windows computer hasn't crashed in weeks. The last time it did was because of a buggy game that required patching. Not Windows fault the developer put out an unfinished game. By the way, I know people that use macs. They also crash.

In the end it's whatever you like. You want a Mac I say all the power to you. I like their designs and some of their concepts. It's just not for me. I'd have to replace too much hardware and software. And give up somethings I cannot do.

Macs Suck - Really?
Apr 27, 2007 7:35PM PDT

When i was given a mac laptop by a friend of mine i was i little usure about what it can and cann't do but now i have sold all my house PC's (my wife's and kids!) and moved them all over to Mac, did you know the Mac mouse is pressure sensative? no? well if you press in the middle you get a left click but if you press over to the right you get the right click, cool eh? Software, well personally i have found that the Mac arctecture is FAR BETTER the pc, to install, Windows/preparing to install/intalling/please restart your computer, Mac Intall/go. so if you want long waits, blue screens of death, always restarting etc go PC WIndows, if you want to just get on with things and enjoy you computer with little to NO hasstle then go Mac.
Windows (including Vista!) is the most annoying piece of crud on the market, ask Dell, they are even reverting to selling there pc's with XP on. YEY WINDOWS - not!

Thats a rant from a happy Mac User
May 8, 2007 6:50AM PDT

But there are happy Windows users too, right? Like me? Or do we not exist anymore..?

I think the reason (on average) Windows has more BSODs and whatnot is to do with the drivers, and the Kernel, or something like that. I dont really know much about that area of computing so I shall not pretend to.

just switched to Mac and so not very concerned with Vista
Apr 28, 2007 12:02AM PDT

The change over wasn't easy, mostly because Office for Mac doesn't have converters from Outlook to Entourage (the mac version of Outlook)you need to use an exchange server. I may just go all the way and use apple mail/address book/calendar.
The Vista problems I see on theis site and elsewhere should have been expected, it always takes a new operating system a while to get off the ground. I may change over some of my PCs eventually, just because I'm curious. For now though I'm really happy with my powerbook, the screen, graphics, photo software, weight, battery life all make me happy. Mac os is easy too, once you get over not having to configure everything yourself. It took me a month or so to get over relinquishing complete control.

Vista BTDT now back with XP
Apr 27, 2007 11:37AM PDT

I so agree Vista sucks. It's not compatible with many of my graphic programs, filters and many other programs...Microsoft attitude is we devoloped it ..let others adapt to our way, not let us work and see how we can devolope new software keeping formats to accomadate old program software..

They are trying to shove Vista down our throats..I used it for a month then reformated back to XP, and belive me that is almost impossible.

I will never go back to it as long as Microsoft as long as there are still updates for XP.

Vista reminds me of WindowsMe and we know how long that lasted

Not happy with Vista
Apr 27, 2007 12:15PM PDT

I have had a similar experience. Had XP working well and then made the mistake of moving to Vista. Result: driver incompatibility, unstable system, slow as all hell, packages that don?t work properly. All I can say is: when is Microsoft going to put some quality into their products and stop ripping their customers off.

Vista is another Bill(greedy) Gates scam
Apr 27, 2007 1:03PM PDT

I guess they need more money out there in "screw all the people land"...
Lets build a new OS,and cause a ripple....they will come, and give us thier money...Oh sure, they will complian, but look how much money will be generated...new programs to be VISTA compatible...new books on where they put all the &^%$# things we got used to in XP....it was running too good, all the programs ran great(well as good as can be expected from MS)...no,no,no ...there will be none of that....
I think, look no further for MR 666......
Stop buying MS products and see how fast they will care for people, not going to happen though....OH well....If we can stand around and let the politicians play with our lives...fuel,medical...oh so much more... Why not MR Gates.,and the greeds.....oh yeah ,don't forget to drink the miracle water.....

Apple, Yes
Apr 27, 2007 6:22PM PDT

An Apple a day will keep the doctors away. Dr. Norton, Dr McAfee, Dr PCcillin, etc...

An IT buddy advised the guts of Vista is not much different than XP and it is all GUI fluff and buff to get the Ooh Aah crowd. Don't give in to the dark side!

Will I use Vista???? Probabkly NEVER...Or I'll wait till Mic
Apr 27, 2007 7:38PM PDT

I have been involved with the Microsoft OS for a number of years starting with Windows 95. This company is one of the few companies that is allowed to sell a DEFECTIVE product. I can't remember ever loading a Windows OS without having a hassle with it. The SAD part is that it is very difficult, for me at least, to contact Microsoft to complain or get technical support.

I am not a stout supporter of Microsoft but I am also leary of trying another OS because of the bad reviews I read from other users of these products...apparentyl every OS manufacturer has problems.

Vista Sucks!!!
Apr 29, 2007 1:21AM PDT

I just wish If Bill Gates was an Honest and Decent person, he would tell the millions of people; "IF YOU BROUGHT WINDOWS VISTA, AND TRIED IT, AND YOU ARE NOT TRULY SATIFIED WITH THE PRODUCT, I WILL GIVE YOU A REFUND FOR THE PRODUCT". Only then will i RESPECT Bill Gates and Microsoft. Mr Gates, you need to put your Customers ahead of your SHAREHOLDS, because without your customers, in the future, you'll have nothing.

What happen to the Security?
May 8, 2007 6:23AM PDT

It's an all-critical Patch Tuesday.

Microsoft has just released seven advisories ? all rated critical ? with patches for at least 18 19 vulnerabilities affecting the Windows operating system, the widely deployed Office productivity suite and the dominant Internet Explorer browser.

Six of the 19 vulnerabilities affect Windows Vista.

The batch of updates includes a promised fix for the Windows DNS RPC vulnerability that was being used in zero-day attacks last month.

There are patches for 7 different vulnerabilities that could lead to code execution attacks against Word, Excel and Office.

Users of Microsoft Exchange are also urged to pay attention to one of the critical bulletins, which cover 4 different flaws.

A cumulative IE update addresses six potentially dangerous bugs. There are the six that apply to IE 7 on Windows Vista.

This information is from ZDNet.com reach came today (5/8/07) in my email. There was not suppose to be any problems or security issues with Windows Vista.

love and hate
Apr 27, 2007 9:12AM PDT

I love Vista and it runs super smooth with the new apps and devices that do work with it and there are many but they ARE NEWER.

One one side, people are too lazy to lookup the updated drivers.
On the other side, some companies have been too lazy to push out updated vista drivers for their older products. It really depends on the quality of that 3rd party vendor.

I do wish MS and computer vendors would allow or offer a dual boot, one with Vista and one with XP. This is what I've always done from 95 to 98, from 98-2000, from 2000 to XP, etc... No OS has been perfectly backwards compatible, especially with older peripherals. That is not the OS's fault, that lies with the vendor of the peripherals that is too lazy to update their older drivers.

So best of both worlds, old and new, do a dual boot!

Warmed up to it
Apr 27, 2007 9:15AM PDT

Im using Vista Ultimate, it takes some time to adjust but im starting to really like it. As a power user the constant badgering to allow applications to run was driving me mad but i found u can turn that off. My laptop runs aero fine with a Vista Score of 4.7. I had to install DirectX 9c in order to get games to work and had to find custom GeForce drivers before the sound would stop stuttering in games. But since ive sorted those issues everything has been smooth sailing and im very impressed so far.

another happy Vista Ultimate user
Apr 27, 2007 5:58PM PDT

MY old tower had a dying motherboard, dead video card, and hardware more than a year out of date when I bought it from a local computer repair/assembler. Over my last Spring Break I decided to build my own and it works amazingly. I originally had it dual-booting XP and Vista Ultimate, but I haven't used XP in nearly the six weeks since I first set it up. Only one program I use ever broke Aero: Paint Shop Pro X, but the 10.10 patch fixed that. A few smaller, non-essential programs stopped working/wouldn't install, but I can't say I miss them since I don't remember what they are. QuarkXPress 7 doesn't install, but I e-mailed Quark and they replied that a solution was in the works. All of the games I have that I've wanted to play have worked. The two biggest gripes I've had so far was that the WinAce context menu items don't work and I can't get ICS to enable a second device internet access in a [device 2]---[tower]---[wall jack] set-up where I don't want to resort to a router.

Vista? Never!
Apr 27, 2007 9:15AM PDT

Vista? Nuts! I'm currently running WinXP Pro. My machine runs well, all of my apps work, my home LAN is humming. So I should "upgrade" to a more bloated, resource intensive OS because...?

If you want security buy a firewall router. A good one is about one-third the cost of Vista.

Lovin' Vista so far
Apr 27, 2007 9:22AM PDT

I've been using Vista since early February on my new laptop...and although there have been a few strange happenings...Vista has not proven to me to be the giant "bug in a box" that many have warned it would be...I enjoy using Vista...and don't really mind being a pre-service pack one guinea pig...If you wanna move forward you have to be willing to put up with a few bumps in the road...Not everyone is going to feel this way...One of the main reasons being a number of drivers were not quite ready for prime time when Vista hit...

Although i enjoy Vista on my new laptop i will not be upgrading my desktops to Vista until Microsoft lowers the price of the upgrade...and makes the upgrade procedure a little easier...With the cost of hardware upgrades necessary to run Vista at Premium level...It just doesn't make sense to pay even more for an O/S upgrade.

I upgraded
Apr 27, 2007 9:26AM PDT

I upgraded a few weeks ago. The whole package, Vista Ultimate and Office 2007. Most everything works. I did not like the fact that all my printers were wiped out and I had to reinstall quicken, quickbooks and my home inspection software. All had PDF drivers and they were wiped with the upgrade. I have a bluetooth USB dongle that doens't work anymore. Sad

I upgrade my RAM form 1.5 to 3gb. I am running a Media PC by HP and the Media Center works better but I will upgrade my video card at some point.

Agian, nothing too bad with the upgrade except some time to do reinstalls.

#$%%^%#$@@ Vista
Apr 27, 2007 9:29AM PDT

Needed a new lap top as old one getting unreliable at the connectors.
Vista was out and no Xp boxes available.
After not being able to run anything I was already running on XP without many many issues including Vista could never even find mail and never find the active port and and and...
It really isn't an "Operating System"
When it started going off line because MS sent automatic updates I knew nothing about knocking my Distributed computing off line..
that was the last straw my next op sys after Xp will be linux.

PS The Toshiba lap top I smashed for therapy is in my trash can along with MS Vista that was loaded on it and Toshiba's reputation for quality with me.

After trying 3 different methods of supposed replace vista with XP
and having the lap top refuse to load it... there was no reason to
retain the unusable pile of trash.

I work for the government and we are still getting MS upgrades to our Win 2000. Must be a reason we havent left it behind.

vista needs a service pack
Apr 27, 2007 1:14PM PDT

I purchased a new pc($800 w/o monitor, with vista on it) 3 weeks ago. 2 days later I had to take it back. A warning kept telling me that there was a problem with the graphics card. I couldnt watch a dvd and chat on yahoo at the same time. I spent 9 hours online with HP and got nothing accomplished so I went back and exchanged it for the same brand and model. Again, the same problem. So, the next day I took it back again (this time the store accused me of doing something to it but reluctantly exchanged it). This time I exchanged it for a Gateway PC ( suposedly a pc made for graphics and media). This PC had the worst graphics I've ever seen on a pc( my old windows 95 was better). So, I gave up. I took the PC to a PC shop and ask them to do something. It cost me another $550 ($200-graphics, $100-power supply $150-1gig and $100-labor) but I finally got a decent PC. The shop owner said that the vista program wasnt quite compatible with the graphics cards. The one in my gateway graphics pc was the lowest rated card you could use with vista (rated a 3). My pc still has a lot of problems. My Windows Media Center quit playing dvd's corectly after 1 week(the only one I could find online that would work on my PC was PowerDVD( cost me another 70 bucks), my explorer keeps shutting down, many programs and devices that say they are compatible, are not(you better try programs with a free trial), and for having 2Gigs, it seems to take forever for it to start up. So beware! These companies are not just ripping us off with vista. They are ripping us off any way they can!

Using it already.
Apr 27, 2007 9:29AM PDT

I recently got a Dell Dimension 9200 with Vista Business pre-loaded. Somehow I've been able to run most of my previous programs, but not without crashes and glitches. I'm a computer tech so I'm glad the problems are on my machine and not on a clients, it gives me a chance to troubleshoot and try to solve the issues.

So far I'm not very impressed with Vista. While the User Account Control is a nice addition for the average user, its a pain in the !!! for me because I use beta's and some other programs plus I install/uninstall a lot of programs, not to mention liking to "tweak" my system.

I'll live with the result, but will advise my clients to go with XP for now.

Dual Boot
Apr 27, 2007 9:37AM PDT

I'm about to set up my system for Dual Boot, as XP is still a solid OS with few issues, and Vista has DirectX 10 for yet-to-be-released games. I built a system a month ago to play these newer games, and am simply waiting until Crysis comes out before loading up Vista. Pretty silly how I spent about 1100 bucks on a system just so I can play a video game.

Apr 27, 2007 9:55AM PDT

for two things...
1)I really miss having a spell checker in the toolbar as I like to post in a lot of forums like this but can no longer check my spelling.
How embarrassing! Sad Yahoo would have one on the toolbar, but I don't think their toolbar is for Vista yet.

2)I only use Yahoo for my email and it will not let you make it your default email Sad
Now I can not right click to "send this page to a friend" on web pages anymore. I never used Outlook on my old computer and I do not want to use Windows Mail on this new computer!
