Now that was a long time ago when IE6 was the current version of IE. Switched to Firefox and haven't had a virus problem since. Also watching what you download and where you download from is a big one, stick to the reputable sites.

Most viruses are actually Trojan horses. I'm old enough to remember that there's a difference.
About a month or so ago, I downloaded an audio file from YouTube.com. I didn't get the mp3 file that I'd expected. It was an *.exe. This has happened many times over the past year. Before, however, I always rejected the file and downloaded it a second or even a third time until I got an mp3. This time I decided -- stupidly, it turned out -- to run the *.exe file. Big mistake.
It crashed my system and wiped out my BIOS, but my PC took care of the BIOS and replaced the damaged one with the backup BIOS. I've had only one problem since then. My PC doesn't boot up as quickly as it used to.
About 6 months ago, I had an SSD installed, and the boot time was about 15 seconds (Win7). Now there's a 10-15-second delay before it boots. I messed around with my BIOS settings, but in vain. One of these days I'll take it to my PC shop to have the BIOS set properly.
Don't click on any downloaded *.exe files from YouTube when you're expecting an mp3 or mp4.
In our home we have an IMac desktop and a MacBook Pro laptop. I hope this doesn't cause me bad luck and we get a virus!!! I'm knocking on wood!!! None yet ![]()
I never have. Not even when I first got online in '06. I did pick up a couple trojans and a worm early on. I learned safe computing in the first 3 years and have had nothing but adware and PUPs since then and few of those. I began on a
'98 PC running XP Pro and have been running 7 Pro, both 32 and 64 bit, since XP support ended. I have only been using MSE since upgrading to 7 a dew years ago. I've just switched to a Macbook Pro, given to me by an old friend, now running Yosemite and with no anit-malware protection at all and I'm not concerned. When Mac Attacks become more common, and they are beginning to but not enough to concern me, I'll get something light and basic.
Took it to a computer shop/ They kept the computer two days. Didn't fix the problem. Paid $125, took it home and found out the problem hadn't been fixed. Went to a National Electronics place with a reputable repair dept. They couldn't get to the problem for a week. Recommended
software. Bought same for $49.95. Didn't work! Contacted Microsoft Customer Help. They offered to fix the problem and any insuring one for a year for $150.00. Reluctantly I accepted the offer and they did fix the problem. Entry level tech 2 hrs. Next level tech 4 hrs. What a deal.
I got it in Oct 2012 on a supposed update for Firefox. after i clicked on it the Acer started acting strange so I shut it down and took it in to a local pc repair shop. 5 days and several hours bench time i got it back. Now here is the kicker. the offending item had invaded the hd root, locked me out of the administrator account, disabled the return to factory settings option and ruined my hidden part for windows install. In effect I had it back but without a new hdd and a new copy of windows I had a paper weight. Yes I used virus software. yes I had backup files. lucky for me my son bought me a 64 bit Lenovo to replace it that following Christmas. Current Backups. Thing is you just never know how some thing will invade and how sophisticated it will be. I limit my upgrades to a minimum and only when I search for the updates. good luck
