When is Do-It-Yourself Data Recovery Worth the Risk?

As we all know how sensitive the process of recovering data from damaged hard disk drives in laptops, desktops, servers, RAID, USB flash drives, phones, tablets and nearly every other device or media type that can preserve data. We are doing a study on it. What do you guys think about DIY Data Recovery? An initial post about it and we would love any recommendation for that post.
