General discussion

when is a virus not a virus

Nov 25, 2004 6:06AM PST

I send an e-mail to some addresses, one of the an AOL address, it seems a virus picks up the e-mail address. Then I get a e-mail message saying there was an error in the sent mail.
Also get spoofs, emails supposedly coming from me to me....usually pornographic
I have scanned my computer and I have no viruses. I'm sure none of my friends do either, but this is driving me nuts. I get three or four per day. Of course, I delete them without opening.

im having a similar problem too with my old hotmail account. People kept sending me e-mails which i suspect are viruses so i never open them. I block the sender, but more e-mails of suspected viruses keep coming from other emails. One time I got one of those e-mails from another one of my email accounts but I'm sure it wasnt be donig that (at least i dont remember doing so). I just made a new e-mail account.

It is called spoofing when you get an email that looks like it comes from you or someone you know, but it is not really from them.
I need to keep this particular email address, it is my main address, but thanks for the thought....it is a good idea to get a new email address but it could happen there too. I would like to know why it happens and how to stop it or prevent it.....

Boog,

As all of this comes from OUTSIDE your computer, you can't do anything about it. Sorry for that.

All you can do is protect your own computer so that that one can't be used by the people who do this. But there are millions of others ...

Thanks, Kees, it can be frustrating. Does it mean that I should not send emails to certain people who end up having the same problem?

No problem to send mail, as long as you take reasonable care that it doesn't contain a virus.
