When I insert cd into laptop, nothing happens at all!

Hi

I'm using a HP Presario V6000 with Vista which has been working fine for about 1 year. I've been able to play and burn cds. But when I now insert a cd, nothing happens at all. When I open/close the door the green light illuminates. I've also tried to see the cd drive in My Computer, but it isn't listed.
I've gone to the HP help centre and re-installed the drivers suggested but nothing changes. Someone suggested I may have a virus, I run Norton and can't see any problems there.
Any ideas?
Really appreciated
Anne

Registry problem

I've just managed to check a little bit further and have found this information re the DVD-RW
'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)'
So I guess I need to do the first thing you've suggested? If I do this wrong will it cause me further problems?
Thanks 4 your help

Just don't do it wrong.

But you always have System Restore if you mess it up. Just make a restore point before you start.
