Hi I am betting it has to do with on board sound. YOU might try to disable the sound and see if it is.
Usually a couple times a session,I'm getting freezes and sound loops while playing Quake 3. On my old Win 98 system,it had to do with IRQ settings. I don't think that's the problem here,as Win XP supposedly takes care of the setup for you. I've got a AMD 2800+,XP Pro,Nvidia NForce sound chipset on board, and ATI Radeon 9700 Pro vid card,128mb. Not overclocked, everything set to normal. Sometimes the freezes happen quickly,so I don't believe it's a heat issue. I'm beginning to wonder if my vid cards going bad because I've had it over a year now and never had any problems until recently. The Windows crash report says it's driver related,so I updated the vid card,NForce drivers and still doing it. Any ideas?? Sometimes it makes a noise like the hard drive is spinning down when it freezes and the freezes sometimes loop and sometimes it just freezes and I have to do a reset-ctrl,alt,del won't do it. I've got 512Ram. And it only happens playing a game, not just surfing or computing.
