"when ever i load into my settings i cant see my icons but i can see my wallpaper...all i can do is go into the Wndows Task Manager andthen click on new task and type something in...then i found out that i can get on the internet, no i need help, what shold i do??.........i have a SONY Vaio and i dont have the vaio recovery wizzard CD"

These tend to create nothing but costly headaches for such users. It's much like a car without a spare tire and you get a flat.

To fix this, it's many times more expensive than if you had kept your spare time.

What answer can you expect?

1. Contact Sony for the CD's before they are no more.
2. Get a full retail XP CD, collect all the drivers from Sony and start over.
3. Install the OS that you have a right to.

A request for help came from the Report Offensive Link rather than a new post. To give an answer was not possible by e-mail, so I created a new post with the supplied information.

Feel free to help this person deal with their flat tire and no spare issue.

Hey Bob,
Kinda hard to get back on the road without a spare. I'm sure the user could get a copy of the restore CD for a minimal cost. I'd recommend picking up the phone or going to the outlet of their choice for a full version of the said OS.

If you have no desktop icons, tells me active desktop is loaded. If you uncheck or disable active desktop, your normal desktop will return.

Here is another place to look, go to your display settings, and see if view as web page is checked. Simply uncheck it, and your desktop should return.

'Blank desktop'

If a user presses the Windows Logo+D key combination, or right-clicks the taskbar and then clicks Show the Desktop, all programs are minimized as expected, but the user may then receive an error message that states that a policy restriction is in place. The desktop is then visible. However, if the user then presses Windows Logo+D again, or right-clicks the taskbar and then clicks Show open windows, the user receives the same error message and none of the windows are restored. These symptoms may occur if you have the "NoDesktop" policy in effect (this policy has a "friendly" name of "Hide and disable all items on the desktop"), [Q328596].
