When do you need to do system restore?

Jul 28, 2006 11:47AM PDT

Hi,

I have a Compaq Presario SR1300NX with 3000+AMD Sempron, 256MB, 60GB and CD-RW. It has been acting up for a while by freezing (locking up), running very slow and also when I bring up internet explorer after I type in search bar the website I want to go to or even put something in a search bar it will start to go to that page and then its gone. I mean the internet explorer just closes. I called the person who works on the computers where I work and he said I have a virus and he would have to do a system restore and couldn't get to it till next week. I don't understand how I could get a virus when I have the Norton software.

In the meantime I did some research on the internet. This is what I did. First I went to my Norton website and ran live updates then did a full system scan (which showed no virsues). Then I downloaded the Ad-Aware Personal and did what it said. Last thing I did was download TuneUp Utilities 2006 and did the 1Click Maintenance. My question is when do you need to do a system restore?

I would also like to know what if there is anything else I need to be doing like disk cleanup, disk defragmentor and system scans? Also what do I need to do on a regular basis; weekly and monthly?

Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

"how I could get a virus when I have the Norton software."?!

That's a good question with a simple answer. New pests are created every minute so it's nearly impossible to keep ahead. Just because you have Norton, it's not some Magic Shield that will protect against opening a new virus infected email. Part of the protection is the owner turning off email previews, not opening email unless it's from someone they know and using other browsers to sidestep the hail of bullets aimed at Windows users.

Also we'll scan with spyware tools like EWIDO since Norton does not do it all and install a fine firewall like ZONE ALARM.

When to do System Restore
Sep 8, 2006 5:16AM PDT

On my system I have Zone Alarm Suite, an old file from MS that they don't support anymore called 'Regclean', another one called 'RegistryFix', Ad-Aware, and AVG Antivirus. All of them are free D/l's except Zone Alarm Suite. I have each set to check and d/l updates as I turn on my computer but some do a check anytime I am online and d/l automatically. For most of the time, and I spend an inordinate amount of time on the net, I don't need to do a manual check of my system as it is done as needed by the programs, even my emails.
The reason I am responding is to let you know that I faithfully run 'Regclean' and then run 'Regitryfix' and then run and set a restore point before I turn tne computer off for the night. The next time I turn on the computer and it boots properly and there are no glitches in the process, which is everytime, I run and set another restore point so I can get back to that perfect starting point when everything was perfect if I have to. True, this creates a number of restore points, but only 2 per day, but Windows will only store so many points and then it erases the older ones to make room for the newest ones.
I have had this computer for over a year and have done it this way for that whole time and have never had a problem booting. Occasionally I will d/l a utility or something and it interferes with the status quo on my system and I have to do a restore but I ony have to go as far back as the boot time for the day and all is well.
All-in-all, I have found that an adequate number of restore points will always save the day; so I say a restore point at the start of the day and one at the end of the day's use should be the minimum that you should have. That frequency has served me well.
