General discussion

Whee have my programs gone?

Jul 28, 2007 5:54AM PDT

The recent newsletter about what files in Windows could be deleted, prompted me to clear off some unused programs via Add/Remove, and then disk cleanup where I selected the options to clean up programs I don't use, and clean up of all but last restore point, also defragmented the computer,
But lots of my Accessories have disappeared, Paint, Games etc. Yet I use these frequently, how can I get them back? I don't have a disk the windows was pre-installed and I was never given a disk. I don't know if anything else is missing yet, probably won't find out until I come to use it!

You really need a Windows XP CD ...

or something like the manufacturers "restore CD" to get those programs back. It could be there is "restore partition" on your hard disk with everything (kind of alternate CD), but then you have gotten some manual or instruction on how to use that.
If you're sure the PC came without any disk, you're badly handicapped. Better contact the manufacturer on what to do.

Maybe, if you tell make and model here, somebody can tell more. But without that information, all we can do is just the general story.

Yes, you should be able to use ...

your friends Windows XP C. Either do a repair install from it, or try sfc /scannow to search for missing files.

When my daughter bought a Fujitsu Siemens (laptop) it surely had all the CD's I expected (including Windows XP and 'Drivers and Utilities'). So I don't understand why you doesn't have them.

Hope this helps.

Before you try anything else......

I'm not sure how you managed to uninstall things like Paint, Games etc, but did you try the usual methods?

In Add/Remove did you click on the link on the left called Add/Remove Windows Components? In there click Accessories then the Details button and see if Paint is still there.

If not, you state you deleted all but the last Restore Point. You only need one good Restore Point so did you try restoring back using that?

lost programs

I did not uninstall Paint or Games at all. I simply don't know why they are no longer there. No, I didn't try to remove any Windows Components and I haven't tried to do the restore back. I don't know how to do this, hopefully there will be some instructions somewhere, and I will try to do that.
