You know, I have come to the simple conclusion that whatever Trump promised before the election is not going to happen. It just seems that he got his throne and he is quite well settled.
a huge number of these people ARE illegals and HAVE committed crimes. A Dem President signed this law into place and if it wasn't for plea deals, most would have been deported rather quickly anyhow. It took years for this particular case to work its way to SCOTUS, and it's no surprise that it's someone from 'sanctuary' California and its court system. The only reason that it's making headlines is because there are so many sanctuary activists pushing to get the laws changed for their own agendas now but weren't pushing for nearly 25 years....
NO Congress has been willing to actually DO anything about immigration reform in order to stem the massive numbers of illegals and court cases involved....how many billions of dollars would actually be saved if they had been willing? All it is now is great talking points for candidates on the election trail for the past few years.....and I'd be willing to bet MY cash that even IF a Dem Congress takes over both Houses AND the Presidency, it STILL won't get done. We saw that with BO's first full years when he could have had anything he wanted because they had super majorities. There was no way Trump's first years could get it done because of the 'resist' from not only Dems but never-Trumpers from the Rep side as well.
This will continue to be nothing more than talking points for quite a while, unless something drastic happens in 2020 and the Reps are able to get super majorities in both Houses with Trump in the leadership again.....and even then, maybe not. There are still going to be many Reps who will be too afraid of the 'racist' attacks to get the job done. And if the Dems get both Houses but Trump still wins the Oval Office, they will pass 'token' bills that they know will be vetoed, but will try to set things up for 2024 with their base.
As you said before.....it's a game....and the only ones who suffer the consequences are the people who haven't caught on to that fact and don't realize they are constantly being lied to just to get votes.
Is in the country legally and gets caught for some misdemeanor they pay the penalty and it's done.
I don't think ICE should be picking them up years later and throwing them in jail until they see a judge.
That all changes if the person is in the country illegally.
From what I can see from the article, it's the ones who were/are here illegally to begin with, commit crimes, even what could be construed as 'misdemeanors' (usually because of plea deals), should be held for deportation. With so many activists for illegals to remain here I can understand why it would take years for ICE to enforce the laws on the books, since they are now being so protected.
If you can't do the time, don't do the crime......'time' in this instance would be either being detained without bond until deportation trials or actually being deported. Case in point......an illegal that hit a man on a motorcycle, decapitating him, and driving for miles as a hit and run with the man's body still hooked to the side panel of his van, getting a 'misdemeanor' charge and sentenced to 14 months in jail for leaving the scene of an 'accident'. Not a word said in court that he will be deported after serving that sentence. You can bet your bottom dollar that when he's ready to be released, no notice will be given to ICE.
Was in the country legally.
They commit some minor offense.
They pay the penalty.
Several years late ICE picks them up and throws them in jail.
They were in the country legally they are still in the country legally.
What's the purpose of that?
ICE should focus on the people in the country illegally they have more than a few years worth of work to do in just that area.

..." linguistic ambiguity"... sounds like it may be the problem. The more verbiage in the law, the more ambiguous it becomes. Lawyers thrive on such ambiguity. With such a large portion of our lawmaking body coming from practising lawyers (who may wish to return there someday) what motivation is there for them to make laws that are clear. As for judges, I'd want none of them to display a clear label of political leaning in their decision making. There should be no discussion about choosing our judges for any other reason than to make certain that a law's intention will be their foremost thought.
be apolitical. I don't EXPECT any will succeed perfectly, in spite of trying their best.
My government will, BTW; an advantage over yours.
The laws appear to be ambiguous only because there are so many areas that are not black and white, lawmakers want to ensure that every aspect of the matter at hand is addressed, in effect, creating extensive legalese.
Lawyers do not thrive on this 'ambiguity'.
recognized by both sides. Gotta read it all, though.

Don't know much about Vox. Its one of the digital news sites struggling to find a viable business model. In past I've usually not gone past the headlines because of the clickbait factor. (Desperately struggling.)
This one may have a left bias, but the article seemed fact-based.
Anyway, there it is for fodder, of needed.
Left-wing and fact-based are both red flags for many of you, so I've done my duty in warning y'all. ![]()
Were not going to fix that by tossing people in jail who have broke the law in some minor way and are in the country legally.
Major offenders...yes jail.
People in the country illegally...yes jail.
As we know out here, Bullhorse is a First Nations name. (Her ex was Sioux; she's Navajo.)
She's talking about us, Bob. ![]()
