Question

What's the difference between these two laptops/processors?

Aug 20, 2015 7:27AM PDT

I am looking at getting a laptop for when I head to uni this September but I really am not sure what all the specs that each laptop have are about.

Can someone explain why the i5 laptop is so much cheaper than the i3? I would think a bigger number is better Silly From what I can see that i5 chip is older than the i3, so maybe that's why it's not as good and won't perform as well?

Cheers in advance!

Answer
I see it

One is the 5th Gen Intel so they get a premium for that. I see a lot of new to how/why things are priced folk out there. The newest thing will cost more because of having to recoup dev costs.

If you want to compare CPUs, use CPUBOSS.com

Advice?
Aug 20, 2015 7:49AM PDT

So on that website the i5 beats the i3 7 to 6.6. So is that the better chip? Or will the newer model i3 be more futureproof or something?

I want my laptop to last a while and I don't want it becoming outdated too quickly. I'll only need it for streaming, word processing, and some casual games (like Football Manager and Kerbal Space Program)

Debateable

The new 5th gen CPU might get you more battery time. I didn't think Kerbal Space was tame enough for a machine without dedicated GPU/RAM for the video section. Be sure to report back about that.

For folk that want battery time etc. One wins. For someone doing video editing the other wins.

You might be right about KSP, I just know it can just about run on my pile o' crap desktop which is a fair few years old, I assumed laptops would've surpassed it's technology.

Thanks for helping, I'll give it all some more thought, I don't like parting with my money Silly

KSP complaints on lag on Gen 3 i5.

That's what I thought. KSP does run but you would be cutting the graphics to low, etc. Gen 4 or 5 would fix this. It will be better but for full screen graphic apps like this, I have to move to dedicated GPU+RAM to be sure.

This was just a random grab of discussions about KSP on an Intel i5 and the i5 GPU. There are many more out there.

Just tried KSP on my x202e with Gen 3 i3

It ran, sound was good but laggy. I didn't put any time on the game but it did run well enough that it could do in a pinch.
