Whats the difference between a .bat and a .cmd file?

Aug 2, 2007 3:15PM PDT

Other than the name?
Does one have more authority?
Is one more capable of preforming one job than another?
Thanks.

I know what a .bat file is. But what of the following .cmd files do you mean (thanks to www.filext.com for the list)?

CMD Command File for Windows NT (Microsoft)
CMD dBASE II Program File
CMD OS/2
CMD OS/2 REXX Batch File
CMD Summit Contact Manager Contact Database (MIE Software Pty Ltd)
CMD Unknown Apple II File (found on Golden Orchard Apple II CD Rom)
CMD DOS CP/M Command File
CMD 1st Reader External Command Menu
