Step away From Mackeeper.

It is widely considered to be Malware itself.

Your iMac has most of the necessary tools to keep it running nicely but there are others that are useful, Cocktail for instance.

AV is largely unnecessary, cue the comments, as there are still no Virus's out there that work on OS X.
Note that the word Virus's does not refer to Trojans and Malware.

Answer
Why MacKeeper is not a malware
Nov 20, 2014 8:34PM PST

Hello micarusb1,

Let me put it like that... MacKeeper is a hot subject, you either love it or hate it. But technically, MacKepeer is not a malware. If you'd get annoyed by pop-ups that remind you about non-finished business with MacKeeper, it is not the reason to call it malware. After all, it's your call.

Officially, MacKeeper is a maintenance program for Mac that claims to fix a lot of issues on you Mac and optimize it, plus, on the top of that, it has live support feature (called Human Inside), anti-theft feature and anti-virus licensed by Avira.

MacKeeper is a bundle. If you are a Mac novice, a grand beginner, that could simplify your life a bit. So, you'll have one click instead of two.

Worth to notice that most of those features already exist by default on your Mac, minus few. It's just that they come under one GUI with a sleek interface.

Yes, they use controversial marketing techniques to promote the application which is part of the reason a lot of users have said not to download it. There have also been some user reports of slowdowns and deleted data. But, again, I've actually asked this question of a lot of security folks in the past, and they say it's definitively not malware.

BTW, you might have heard the recent news regarding Wirelurker virus proving that OS X is not THAT AV protected.

When did Wirelurker become a virus?

Have you seen the hoops you have to jump through to make that piece of malware work?

Are you still employed by Zeobit?

MacKeeper

For those who are not so attentive I will repeat again that MacKeeper is not a malware. Yes, it does have problems with bad naming and aggressive advertisements. But without it we wouldn't be able to return hundreds of stolen Macs to our customers (thanks to our Anti Theft feature). With MacKeeper you can have your own Apple certified expert, ready to help you 24/7. I'm sure, you are an advanced Mac use, but there are thousands of Mac pioneers who need to be supported.

I would like to mention that we are launching a brand new site and a brand new MacKeeper in a few days. Thanks to all your angry messages regarding our ads, etc we had a chance to change our positioning and tactics. So, don't judge it before the release.

I can also offer you to try the product and tell me your thoughts (marena at kromtech dot com). I would really appreciate your feedback.
