There isn't an absolute "best".
by Tarq57 / November 11, 2008 9:21 AM PST

First off, no need to use CAPITALS. It's the web equivalent of yelling. Also a little hard to read.

As to the best, there isn't one. There are plenty of user opinions as to what is best, but really what is best on one day might be second or third best on another. Their abilities can differ depending on the malware, when it was release, etc.

What will likely be best for you is a piece of software that is stable, has generally good detection and cleaning ability, that you can easily get to grips with (ie; intuitive interface/good help file/good forum or other support) and that doesn't bog your system down.

I see in your other thread you are using Vista 64bit. That seriously limits what you can put on it. A lot of the popular free AV's and Firewalls don't have a 64bit version (yet.) So you might have to go with something that does. I use a roll-your-own-freeware suite myself.Separate AV, AS, and firewall, plus a couple other bits and pieces. You may not wish to do that, nor have the luxury of being able to.

You've indicated you aren't too computer savvy. In your situation I think a good result might be achieved by a pay-for suite like NIS 2009, by Symantec. Earlier Symantec versions attracted a lot of notoriety for being bloated, and having poor support. A lot of folk won't use them. But I've read quite a number of good user opinions about NIS2009.
Kaspersky does have a good rep, but there are lots of reports of slowdowns. NOD32 also has a good rep. Webroot...once did. AVG once did. They appear to be a bit buggy now.

PS on this thread you say

you run XP, on the other thread Vista64.
Which is it?

You can change the font size
by Tarq57 / November 12, 2008 4:11 AM PST

on a web page by pushing "Ctrl" and scrolling the mouse wheel. Make it as big as you want. There, no more caps needed.
So, what do you want? One application with the antivirus, antispyware, and firewall built in? Or three separate applications?
I like to be involved in the computers' security, so I have three separates. (And a couple of others)
You might not be, in which case I would suggest a suite. Norton Internet Security 2009 is getting lots of good reviews.

In reply to: Thank you

and if you wanted to roll your own security "suite", Avast antivirus is my personal favourite, Avira antivirus is also very good and has a very dedicated following, I'm not a fan of AVG; think it's trying to be too much right now and not quite succeeding.
Comodo firewall is popular and secure. If you install it with the "D+" component active, it's a very powerful antimalware, but you have to know how to answer the pop-ups.
Other popular firewalls include OnlineArmour, ZoneAlarm, and Kerio.
Good antispywares include Superantispyware (free- demand, and paid- realtime available) MalwareBytesAntimalware (ditto) and Mamatu.
Good luck.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
