I suggest an iPod Touch

He could send free SMS when he's in range of wifi and play better games than most cell phones. Best part is it does not require a cellular contract or additional line.

Nod to the iTouch.

But it's texting (iText) is just to other Apple users so far.

My son has the Virgin Mobile android phone with unlimited data and text for 25 a month. I think there are 2 models over at Target for that.

Free SMS apps

Bob, FWIW there are a whole slew of free SMS apps to avoid the carrier charges to use on an iPod Touch. You can also use Google Voice & the free Talkatone app for both free VoIP calling & free SMS on the Touch.

Great phone

I would recommend the Samsung Infuse for a preteen boy. The Infuse has a large 4.5 inch screen, which is great for easy and clean viewing, when playing games or texting. It also has a Super AMOLED screen for High quality gaming.
