Open Office is available for current Macs and creates PDFs with ease.
Mozilla has a Mac version and included is Composer.

(I posted this at the end of a long thread. The reply by mrmacfixit follows.)
.... if anything else, to create a webpage, to have ad-free email, and to convert documents to PDF?
I'm trying to keep the price down, so have deleted the MS Basic Office from my ''wish list'', IF I understand correctly that AppleWorks has a word processor and spread sheet.
(I will go for the AppleCare.)
I am also concerned re: transferring data from my old PC. (Will probably need to find a local company to do it for me.)
Now, for a silly question - will Google still be available?
Thank you.

With a .mac (dotmac) account you will have ad free mail, tools to create and space to store, a web page. Plus a few other things.
Yes, Appleworks has a word processor and spread sheet which can open and save a number of different formats.
Transfer of data from PC to Mac to doable by yourself with a piece of software, whose name escapes me right now. Remember that only the Data will be any good, the programs will not.
Of course Google will still be available to you.
Your question would be better answered as a new post in the Mac forum. This thread is a little long now.
Hope this helps
