Question

What wifi card is compatible with my computer?

Jan 29, 2014 5:41AM PST

Hello, I'm using a Gateway SX2110G-UW308 desktop pc and I need to find a compatible WiFi card for it. Does anyone know what card I will need?

For a card that really depends on what free slots you have at the motherboard, but PCI is very common and most mothersboards can accomodate a few cards.
The alternative is a USB-dongle or an antenna that you connect to the Ethernet port. For these you don't have to open the case.

Be sure that whatever you buy comes with the drivers necessary for your OS, or at least with a download link in the documentation.

I see someone marked Kees' answer thumbs down, was it you?

If it was you, you need to explain why you didn't like that answer. It looks to me like a perfectly good answer. Maybe you don't know what expansion slots you have? If not, we can tell you how to find out although that should be in your user guide. If it were me, I'd follow the suggestion to get a USB dongle. You just plug in any USB WiFi adapter in, install the driver that comes with it, and you're in business. You can buy them for as little as $10. When I looked, I saw some specs at Tiger Direct that said there're NO available expansion slots, so if that's the case for you, there's no choice but the USB adapter.

Sadly, wrong size card.
Feb 5, 2014 12:32AM PST

Sadly, that's the wrong size card. But I found a pic in the first link that shows the slot for the card I'm needing at the very top of the motherboard. I couldn't link the photo because it's so small that you can't see it and it doesn't clear up enough when it's resized. but if you open the first link you posted and click on the thing that opens all of the images of the computer. The image that shows the slot is the one that shows the entire inside of the comp through the side panel. The slot it needs to fit is at the very top of the motherboard. I'll go ahead and put the link in this message so I don't confuse anyone.

You could use the card I linked without the bracket,

you could modify the bracket on the one I linked (should be fairly easy if you're the least bit handy) or find another card with decent ratings and a low-profile bracket.

Let us know how it works out.

Ya, soz, i misinterpreted the answer lolz.
Feb 5, 2014 12:05AM PST

Ya, sorry bout that. I completely misinterpreted Kees' answer. I was thinking the card had to be a specific size due to the Gateway SX series desktops being a third the size of a normal. That's why I was trying to find one that was compatible, but I opened it up and discovered there is no difference in the size of the card needed compared to normal sized computers. Unfortunately I didn't think to do that until after i marked it as unhelpful. Sorry about that. As for USB dongles or ethernet antennas, I don't actually like those. The only USB ones I can get a hold of require you to pay a monthly fee to use them, and there isn't a single place around here that I can get the ethernet antenna from. I'm needing an internal wifi card. It needs to be one that is held in place by a clip-like thing on one end and has a small wedge-like opening on the other so that the weird wedge-like spot in the spot it connects to can fit into it. (Sorry, I have no idea how to properly explain that wedge-like spot, lolz.) Also, I'm running Windows 8.1 on my computer and I don't trust the idea of using anything other than an internal wifi card for it. I checked the local Wal-Mart for one but they don't stock internal wifi cards. So I'm probably going to need a model number and name of one to search for on Amazon.

No explanation needed...

The question was clear and asked about what wifi card might be compatible. The same question many have and what brought them to this link because it came up on Google. The question wasn't answered and there was no question about usb adapters.
