As to the CPU, any i3 or better CPU is nice today. But then what about the rest of the PC? And given the great deals out there, why build one?

Given no budget, and no game to use to base the GPU and RAM on I can't offer much.

How about a cheap workstation with 8GB RAM and a lot more?

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=XW8400-XEON266X2-PB-R&cat=SYS is 399, 8GB RAM, XP Pro CDs, 1GB Video card, 2x500GB drives and more.

The OS may be familiar too. I think this one should work well at anything we could throw at it.
